Lack of bigger turbos and tuning. Discuss.

Why are there not full frame or at least hybrid turbo options and more robust custom tuning options for the 2.0T Giulia after a good 2 years? I'm finding it rather annoying that nothing has came to the market with these with such an easy turbo location for replacements and easy ecu to deal with similar to continental simos ecus. Even the downpipe options are sparse and it's only 2 bends with a funky turbine flange. This engine is after all fully forged; crank, rods, pistons with oil squirters which could easily support 500whp/450wtq with proper calibration/fueling.

It's just twin charging. And requires a 48v power system. It's luxury power delivery not rx7 twin turbo honestly.

I wonder tho....can fit alot under the giulia hood

What do you all think about a turbo like this? -apologies if this is redundant. Just got my 2.0t Giulia and am excited to see what upgrades I can do.

Rule #1 NEVER buy ebay turbos!

Also that is just a generic one so you will have to do a huge amount of custom work to get it to even fit, then you would have to figure out the wastegate situation, and finally get the car tuned. As of right now there are a few placed that can build you a hybrid turbo (larger internal parts but stock housing) that can get you to 350-400hp range. You still have the issue of getting it tuned though. Rumor is there is going to be a bolt on upgrade kit with tuning coming to market one day though

Ive been talking to one of my friends in the volvo community. He manufactures hybrid turbo's for the S60 and S60R platform and wants to get in to ours as well. I'll be sending him a core this week for him to disassemble and work his magic. The idea here is once we have a proof of concept and I can run it on a local dyno for real numbers he will offer the conversion service to the community for those interested.

Final costs will likely be between $1,500-2,500 depending on how much needs machined and what he feels needs replaced to reliably make the power.
I would be interested for sure.

Hahah, 400whp on hybrid forget [emoji16][emoji16]

Yeah 400whp is a farfetch for our turbo..I’m good with 360-380hp
Yeah, the first step is to get him the core for inspection. He has to measure both housings and see what he can machine to fit inside of it. The goal is to produce a product that looks identical to the oem turbo so if a dealer looked at the car there would be no easy way to tell that it was modified. Our goal is to find a combination that will get 400whp out of it but might not be possible. I'm confident he can work is magic to at least squeeze as much power out of the oem unit as possible.

I would like to state that users would likely need a high flow or cat-less down pipe to get the full potential.

What about low end torque and turbo spool up? More power is great but if it is not usable except in a long straight line, it is pretty much not usable to me at all.

Also some effort to get a California executive order would be great, preferably for a high flow cat + hybrid turbo + 91 octane (R+M/2) tune combination. I certainly would pay a premium for a smog legal setup.

Spool up would still be fast. We aren't changing a lot here, there's only so much space we have to work with in the stock turbo shell. Sure we can do a bit of machining and swapping wheels but this isn't a radically big change. It helps these units are already a divided style setup for quick spooling times.

In theory the tubo will look the same as OEM so Cali tech can stare at it all day long and never be able to tell its been modified internally.

I seriously don't see this thread ever going anywhere. We are starting with a tiny GT20 turbo (Garret advertises is good for 260hp) that Alfa already put in a larger then normal wheel.l to get it up to our stock power. There is just no more room left in that housing.

Just dropping by to let you guys know there is tranny upgrade options if we need to go that far. This one is for 750hp/750tq. Technically its for a Supra but it should (based on the fact its still a ZF 8HP50) work since its basically just a drop in clutchpack replacement

That's surprisingly cheap all things considered.

I've still got a warranty on my car so if anything breaks I'll just put it back to stock and bring it in for repair. After my warranty on the other hand, if I did end up losing my transmission this would definitely be a route I would go if I had to replace it anyways.

Dumb question, since most internals including valves are forged, considering what we would be pushing with a hybrid, shouldn't they be able to handle it?

The deciding factor IMO if this will make/break is, getting a proper tune to go along with the hybrid. Oversimplifying here, but assuming we have a ship/rebuild/install hybrid turbo model, we'll need one of the major players (i.e EC, Squadra, etc.) to modify existing tune to accommodate the hybrid. Which begs the question if they're willing to do it?

If not, customers we'll need to source other methods to get it tuned. To really get a large mass of folks to do this, they'll probably want their existing tune to accommodate the hybrid.

Regarding the trans, if all you're after is power, i really don't see the investment for all the mods, hybrid turbo, and new tranny making much sense when you can pick up a QV. Unless AWD is your thing or a sunroof :)

I'll need to data log but in theory a JB4 with MAP2 should work just fine with a hybrid. If not I'll reach out to burger for support.

Your also talking less than 3k for a 0-60 thats as fast or even maybe even faster a stock QV

$600 Catless downpipe
$20 o2 fooler (so it doesn't throw a cell)
$550 JB4 piggyback
$1,500-$2,500 for a hybrid turbo.
$40 K&N air filter
$100 GFB Diverter.

There's no need for a new trans. The stock one should hold up fine until around 450tq

I'm pretty confident in Nick to pop out a very aggressive hybrid turbo for us. That being said I don't plan on stopping until I can make 400whp so I'll continue to modify the Alfa until I can meet those goals. It won't happen overnight but the hybrid turbo is a good place to start. Hopefully I can help out the community while I'm at it.

Maybe 400 crank with WMI, but that may be pushing it based on kozaks hybrid setup.

It is but forget e30 or racegas for the jb4. Alfas timing is too low on the 2.0l for any jb4 maps to take advantage. You'll need to make a custom map for it to work well anyways
I was wondering about that.

Has anyone played with custom maps yet? Im guessing I should be able to run around the equivalency of a e30 tune with 93*+ water meth

Ive made several custom maps...

Hot weather road course map...

114473

Cool weather road course map...

114474

But jb4 is not going to allow you to take advantage of higher octane than 93.

For that youll need a racegas / e30 tune

FWIW, I've had the DV+ for over a 1.5yrs with zero CELs. Not sure if I'm lucky or not. Only CEL i've seen is every 6 months or so which I always knew was related to the W05 recall + EC intake. Just ordered a new venturi from EC to get that out of the way.

Stock 4 piston breaks are plenty, unless you're tracking. You may need to change shoes/rotors to get a bit more grip. Giulia has ventilation for the breaks which is great IMO, I've never noticed any fading wet/dry. I'm not a track guy, i'm more top-end type of guy so not unusual for me to break at high speeds and then repeat.

I'm in Fort Wayne Indiana we could have a racetrack day lol
Hey, your not far at all! Thats only like a two hour drive from me. To bad there's nothing in wapakoneta as its the mid way point between us.

The GTX2863R we are trying to use is a reverse CHRA so I didnt have to do anything special.

Lines are easy but hopefully those come out looking better than how the high pressure side was done in that picture :)
It would be helpful if @kozak could post pictures of his feed line so we can see how he adapted it to his borg warner turbo.
