I just bit the bullet and bought an iPhone 13 partly to get full screen CarPlay. I wanted to share my experience and am finding it to be a big improvement over AA. I’ve been away from iOS using androids for 10 years, but Apple has come a long way. CarPlay seems to pop up on the Alfa screen right away and I haven’t had any connection issues. On AA, I’d often have to plug and replug multiple times. Also, the Apple Maps interface is pretty good and easier to use than google maps. The audio apps all have a consistent interface and are easy to figure out.
My new Pixel 6 Pro is also a top tier phone, and it pops up AA quickly too. It's all on the phones power to launch it.

OT but still related: I just bought a new phone (old one died) with new AA and new Android. AA will not start unless I unlock the phone first! Also if I stop for gas and restart the phone has already locked and I must unplug the phone, unlock it, then re-plug the phone. The phone will not unlock if the engine is running. All incredibly inconvenient.

Am I missing something, or is there a way to get reasonable behavior out of this?

You need to change the settings in the phone to unlock with trusted devices

I do not see any such setting.
I did check "start Android Auto when locked" but that clearly is not sufficient.
My wife has the same phone and the same problem in her Subaru.

It works if your car supports it. Apparently Alfa does not. Neither does MBZ. Jag does.

I've had every Pixel phone except the Pixel 5, Now I have the Pixel 6 Pro, Connection is almost instant. I also have NEVER had to unplug and replug to get it to connect. Not all Android Devices are trash.

I have had no issues with Android Auto on my Samsung Galaxy S20 either. Wired connection works good in the Alfa and wireless AA is great on our new Durango too.

In the past, the few issues I have had with Android Auto were fixed with new cables.

In the Android Auto app...

I did say that I found that one. What I did not see is "unlock with trusted devices".
ahh, missed it. Settings --> Smart Lock --> Trusted Devices. It's really a Bluetooth setting, not Android Auto.

It seems to be Settings-->Security-->Smart Lock --> Trusted Devices--> Alfa Connect

It appears that you must have already connected to said trusted device before trying this.

They seem to change the location of the settings, so when I get into Settings, I search. It's the fastest way to find what I want.

Nothing that we have heard. Overriding the DPI doesn't work like other manufactures so this is definitely either in the firmware or in the OS. To my knowledge, there's no way around this unless you use a different USB device for Android auto that just uses the headunit screen. This may require direct connection in back of the unit, don't think this is possible from just USB.
