Total engine shutdown survey

As suggested by Chipps perhaps its time for a survey on the number of people who have experienced a total engine shutdown while driving.

When I stay stock I mean no pedal booster, no engine intake or any other changes that can affect the operation of the engine management systems. Even potentially.

2.0 is the base or Ti Giulia's and 2.9 those fortunate enough to have a Quadrifoglio.

My first attempt at a survey so if this doesn't work that's why

Mods, lets keep this poll alive. I've seen a number of new owners recently posting concerns regarding stalling. It seems, these issues are STILL happening and not being addressed from the factory. The new owner's should NOT be driving a vehicle that stalls because a critical update was not performed which would prevent this from happening in the first place.

At this time, I am in the strong opinion that a mandatory recall should be issued for all cars that have not received the latest ECU update or to correct whatever underlying issue that's causing the engine to stall. Its just too many people who have experienced (myself included) for it NOT to be a sign of a much wider problem.

Below is the link to file a complaint.

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

Select “File a Complaint” within the Defects and Recalls section of the home page. The information you submit via the Web site is recorded in VOQ format, entered into our consumer complaint database, and provided to our technical staff for evaluation.

FYI - VW just issued a voluntary recall for stalling issues in their cars. AR should be proactive and do the same ASAP before anyone gets into an accident and gets rear ended.

More information about VW's recall

Toyota also issued a voluntary recall due to stalling. Again, another manufacturer (Toyota) is being proactive as well.

After an update I did stall BUT what was required was a fuel injection calibration procedure. It may appear that most shops are skipping the calibration after the update is performed. Apparently its a crucial procedure

Having an engine stall simply should NOT happen! Not excuses should be made on behalf of AR.

Its a HUGE safety issue. The only time an engine should stop when started is under the following conditions either:

1) User presses the push/start button ignition
2) In the event of an accident.
3) Out of gas

AR has a fix for the engine stalling but cars are still leaving the lots without the crucial updates. New owner's are driving and enjoying their cars and then boom, the engine stalls. It happened to me back in April and here we are almost in September and the issue is still cropping up for new owners. Not acceptable under any conditions.

I am a fan, I love my car and I want it to succeed but we will NOT tolerate this issue as consumers. We expect better.

I have filed my complaint. "Your Complaint Number: 11020747"

I recommend anyone who has experienced stalling just ONCE to file a complaint as well. Its a very easy process.

So we (the customers) are to help them "crack" the U.S. market by hiding their reliability issues and not vocalizing our concerns? Someone can get seriously hurt, injured or worse. They have known about the Stalling issues since early this year and its almost September and the stalling issue is still happening? If they are not being proactive about it, then someone should twist their arm.

The U.S. automotive market is cutthroat. Only the best survive and customers speak with their wallets. They were shown the exit door before due to their reliability issues and they were very much aware of what they needed to do in order to come back to the U.S. Stalling issues is not something you can sweep under the rug and it needs to be addressed front and center. Like I said before, I am a fan of Alfa and I love the Giulia, love my car! I am enamored with the brand but I am not a fanboy and will vocalize unbiased criticism.

Missed this poll. For what it's worth, my stock Ti has had no issues in 1,300 miles. Built March '17, bought July, received seven RRTs at purchase.

I think very few Giulias have problems.....what you see on this forum is a phenomenon scientifically known as "referral filter bias".....Those with an issue seek advise...they reach out to a forum....the many, many, many more who don't, don't even know this forum exists.....

Hi,

Your text here above summaries the reality.
Some people here declaring to be in love with AR are just trying to have their issue solved.
I can understand the finality of the operation but cannot approve the way to achieve it.

For information my car is 6 month old, never had a problem with engine, gearbox,.....
30 000 km today.
To be exhaustive, I consider some progress could be done in the infotainment system, but this is by far the best car I owned, even compared to my previous A6.
OK, the booth was better/larger and there was more room inside, but in my Giulia I feel safer, and this is the most important point IMHO.

Dang, sorry to hear that. First time mine stalled was exactly 1000 miles. Usually the software update works. I'm sure they'll start with that.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

In my case i had couple of times when the engine while idling would gitter dropping rpm signifcantly and almost stalling but then recovering back up. It felt almost like it was choking.

A couple of weeks after i drove off the dealership lot they called me asking how am i doing and how the car behaves. I tried to explain them what i have experienced. They asked how many miles are on the car.
I said 300 miles. They replied that this issue is known and usually go away as the car breaks in.

Not sure if it is acceptable to have such issue for the first 1000 mile or so however i cannot really claim that my car actually stalled. It sure did choked couple of times but never stalled. Hopefully they are speaking the truth and it will stop choking when the breaking in process is complete. So far it happened only 2 or 3 times

Missed this poll but wanted to reply this thread with issue I had

Had same issue w my base at 7300 miles... been a month or so, so far so ,good...but my fuel pump, (had no idea at the time) quit at highway speed also...wanted to post my info to the poll but said it was closed. Alfa care was great and issue was quick to diagnose but still scary to have to deal with a flameout at 75mph...I equate this car to an F-16 fighter, it’s like a dream but you have to stay ahead of the jet, otherwise the best thing is EJECT, ( or call Alfa roadside)

I have one of the first Giulia's (got it way back in January of 2017), and I had it die on me yesterday.

I was driving on the highway going 80-85 perhaps, and all of the sudden the check engine light, and service electronic throttle control come up. This has happen many times before so it almost seemed normal, and I was going to pull over and use my obd2 reader to read the code. But just a few seconds after, the car suddenly shut off and rapidly slowed down to about 20 mph and then slowly slowed down from there. It was one of the most terrifying experiences because at the time of the stall I was trying to go into the emergency lane to pull over and read the code, and as I was going from the left lane to the right I was directly in front of a semi truck when the car died. I am not exaggerating when I say I was probably 25 feet from getting bit by the semi. After pulling over I tried to turn the car back on and it wouldn't start. You could hear the starter turning, but no ignition.

As I said this was one of the most terrifying experiences, and hope to get it resolved soon. My nearest alfa dealership is about 150 miles away (Nyle Maxwell Alfa Romeo Austin, TX). I will have it towed there later today, and I will keep everyone updated on what is happening.

I have attached a video of what Is happening right now when I try to start the car.

Anyone look into whether or not the fuel pickup or sender may be out of place? I just saw an episode of Restoration Garage last night and a New-Old 66 427 Cobra had wonky oil pressure. New pump was worn out (fresh rebuild), dipstick was way off (Taiwan-too long) and car only had a couple liters of oil in it. They discovered this by measuring fluid in the pan with the stick in place, in the parts washer. Upgraded to a high volume pump, regraduated the dipstick and put the 8 or 9 liters of oil it should have had from the get go. Bullet dodged, bottom end was OK. Only had a few miles on it.

Maybe the fuel pumps die from starvation+high pressure?

For those who have had the issue with the car stalling, contact me. 512-983-3339 or pradeep@austindroneworks.com

I have started to gather a group of people who has also had the same issue. I plan on being the class head for a class action lawsuit against Alfa Romeo concerning the matter. Would you like to take part as well?

All that I would need is that you write me a descriptive email regarding what happen to your car, and talk about how you don't feel safe driving that car. I will not disclose the names or any identifiable information about anyone who participates.

From the research that I have gathered, Alfa is already aware of the problem but they aren't actively fixing it. I have spoken to a few people who have had their cars replaced for the same issue. They even received $1200 for the "inconvenience" (hush money).

I would not advise that anyone send any private information to this individual. Class action lawsuits are run by law firms, not by individuals. My sense is that this person may use this information to bully Alfa into replacing his vehicle.

OP, you should work to lemon law your vehicle if you are having issues, or you should speak with a lawyer to start a class action lawsuit if you feel this is what you'd like to do. There are plenty of stories regarding this issue all over these forums.
