how can we force the apple carplay interface to use android auto? is there any choice besides UX999PRO?
I believe there are several devices out there that accept both Android and Apple and then usually deliver the signal to the car's head unit as apple carplay (usually wireless)

I would prefer a wired solution to avoid lag and be overall cheaper - but have not found anything

Interesting. I do see the wireless arrangements: useless on a long drive and I am almost always on a long drive. I see a wired unit that converts your ACP phone to use an AA display for sale at Walmart for $31, but that is the opposite of what we want here.

According to what I see in reviews you can expect substantial delays (like 1/2 a minute) for your phone to connect to a wireless AA device.

I can't believe Alfa has yet to update their etm to have this. I have a gen 3 etm (2019) and this is still an issue
First, I guess you have 2nd gen unit if it is MY2019 US model. On forums we call gen 3 units for MY20 with touch and different UI with widgets. What is inteersting Alfa calls them gen 2.5 - really they are the same hardware as gen 2, just more flash. (in oppose to gen 1 which was totally different design inside, not even similar).
Yes, not having full 8/8 screen on AA is pity - here partially it is Google guilty, as they didn't have proper specs to allow flexibility on resolution and aspect ratios for AA originally, and so all car manufacturers who offered e.g. wide screens had similar limitations. Of ourse that is pity and here Alfa lacks of keeping customers happy, that they didn't push update when Google was ready with any screen support. Especially, as alredy in 2018 google presented dual screen AA feature in Giulia, and somehow they unlocked full width. Of course they could have special compilation/hack on AA side or maybe they had test version of Alfa software in ETM to allow such. Either way, unlocking wide screen must been trivial one setting change or recompiling old code with newer set of libraries for AA or something like that. Of course that requires retesting, and they were probably already on postlift ETMs development and not much interested going backwards. Note, there was even petition signed by around 500 people worldwide for Alfa to prepare that update - buy they replied no plans, may consider if there will be need of fixing something more cricital in software - more or less liek that. Was 2 -3 years ago or so.
Nowaday pretty good toy though gets released which solves this using carplay USB link and bridge to AA on WiFi. It is AAWireless. They are on beta with this functionality currently, but people using it with minor issues sometimes. These guys originally released product with AA USB link, but only recently switched to use carplay protocol. So, keep observing them, it may be good solution once they have mature firmware.
