Active Aero System needs servicing

Today I got a warning light: Active Aero Sysyem Needs Servicing. I stopped on the shoulder to take a look and it appears that the servos did not bring the splitter back up when I reduced speed. Was still like that when I got home.

I will post on whether or not it “resets” itself when I start her up later. If not, I’m going to have to be even more careful going into the driveway and over bumps and dips until I take her in for her first service (due late June).

Anyone else experienced this?

My car gets this fault everytime I drive it. Probably 100's of fault codes. It has been to the dealer multiple times and both actuators have been replaced. Still get this fault. It's absurd that Alfa can't get this right. The problem is when the spliiter is stuck in the down position I can easily be damaged and this is not an inexpensive part. My dealer is great but they throw their hands up in the air with this problem as Alfa has no real solution to fix this.

Hi,

I'm very sorry to hear this. Have you had a case open for this concern?

Warm weather traffic is only time it does it for me. Especially slow downs and speed ups on bridges or expressway when you go 20mph to 50 mph and back down constantly. That splitter is moving up and down. Always resets after shutdown.
Funny people use to want it stuck down. looked cool...

Does anyone know if it is possible to recalibrate the splitter using MES? I read somewhere the dealer does this as a fix in some cases but was not sure if this is a WITECH only thing. I can hunt around in MES tonight as well. I’m not super concerned since the splitter always goes back up after a restart. It’s so weird how random the glitch is.

I got this error today. I hit a rock a about a thousand or so miles back, but have had no issues until today.

It happened in RACE mode. After shut off the code cleared and my 130 mile trip home was flawless.

Edit: pics of codes. See attached. Looks like the actuators we’re out of sync. Also, something to do with a lateral acceleration sensor? This was pulled at the dealer. They told me there were no time stamps.

So my 2020 with 600 miles on it has now had this issue happen 4 or so times. Fixes itself when I restart the car. I have an appointment with the dealer (Westbury Alfa Romeo) on Monday to check it out (amongst the other electrical issues I am having with the infotainment and remote start) , but I just noticed now that I've damaged the bottom and back of the splitter, as in pieces of the carbon fiber are scratched and small chunks chipped off on the back edge under the car. Thankfully its not visible from above, but its there on an almost new car. This happened when the spoiler was stuck down the first time and I backed into my driveway not knowing restarting will reset it.

After reading this post where people are being told that minor damage may CAUSE the issue, I really hope I am not on the hook for an $2k piece of carbon fiber right now. Also as mentioned I'm kind of annoyed to have this much damage on an almost new car. While I haven't even had the discussion with the servicing dealer yet, I am just anticipating a solid no on a replacement since I was the one who damaged it, but it was damaged because it malfunctioned. @AlfaRomeoCares I may need your help here....

Sounds like a tricky one. The motors also get thrown on the equation if they were damaged when the splitter was damaged since they were in the extended position. It will come down to the dealer. Alfa Romeo Cares cannot make the dealer do anything against what they feel is the correct thing to do. It would be awesome if they replaced the splitter for cosmetic purposes rather than functionality though.

Good morning. I'm a new owner of a 2017 Giulia Quadrifoglio and I believe I damaged the right-side actuator as I was trying to carefully and apparently too slowly pulling up into my driveway. Right side of the aero splitter is pushed back in.

Do you mind telling roughly what it cost to have the actuators replaced?

The lack of a camera (or camera that shows me the view) is a real miss for Alfa. I can only hope the newer versions have a camera so you can see curbs, parking pillars, etc.

My understanding is that those actuators are "smart" devices that are CAN "network" attached. One acts as master, the 2nd one slave. They talk to each other to maintain status and synchronize their movements, as well as responding to commands from the "network" so they are not mere actuators mechanism. Think of them as stand along robotics with "brain" that work in tandem.

W.r.t. cameras... I am thinking those tiny light-weight rear view dashcams may be wired thru firewall thru engine bay and drops down to under car and suitable adhesive to attach to the front chin... one may watch it being deployed / retracted. Yes with increased risk of being ripped off by obstacles and hit by road debris.

You're correct about how the actuators work, so yea, makes sense for them to be that pricey.

As for the camera, how do you plan to connect it to view it on the main screen? Is that even possible? Perhaps have to tap into the factory rear camera..

My splitter issue became a high level issue when anytime I drove anywhere I had the fault. Pull over, restart and continue on. Alfa Cares set up a case and I took my Giulia to Birmingham Alfa Romeo (AL). They are an Alfa, Fiat and Maserati dealership among others and seem to have lots of Italian experience. My local Alfa dealer (before he was lost to the ether) had service done by a local Mopar, Chrysler shop. They tried somewhat-- The guys in Birmingham replaced both actuators, checked all wiring, the geometry of the mounts and put it all back together. Had this done November 21 and no issues since. I haven't put many miles on it since but not a single fault since. I don't even think about the splitter anymore--as it should be.

Having the same issue here on my 2018 Quadrifoglio where the spoiler lowers above 70 but then throws a warning light upon deceleration. It resets after the car is turned off and back on. The dealership recalibrated it, but the problem persists. I think I'll take it back to see if they would consider changing the actuators since it's under warranty.

Hello all. I wonder if anyone can explain or has experienced this. The service messaged popped up. I checked the splitter and it was in the up position. I drove it in D fast enough to lower it. The message didn’t disappear. When I checked the splitter one side is up, and one side is down. There is no debris, I’ve not hit anything either. It’s all a bit odd.

Has anyone worked on the car recently to include removal of the front bumper?

I had that exact situation happen 30 miles after having my radiator replaced at an Alfa dealer (no longer in business.. shocker). Same side even. Step one is you need to buy MES and the accompanying equipment (if you don't already have it) and run the splitter readjust procedure. If that doesn't work, replace the passenger side actuator. Replacing the actuator with the front bumper on is possible but a total bitch and you'll need a low profile pass thru socket wrench. Still better than removing the front bumper and risking breaking the retaining tabs, in my opinion.

If that doesn't work, it probably needs to go to a dealer as there's not much else you can do as a DIY guy. Unless the MES scan shows other reasons why it may be malfunctioning I.E. sensor failure somewhere but I doubt it.

Hi all, I have had the active aero issue with my qv on and off with a few years but it is now off consistently with a few months. I used to regularly lower it manually and clean it and lub up the sliding contact points etc. That would work for a while. But it would start happening again after a while.

The last time I lowered I actually gave the rubber/plastic contact point that the splitter slides up against a light sanding on both sides. Just enough to smoothen it and wear it down very slightly. the points are not on the splitter but the bumper itself. I then lubed it up against with silicon spray. I havnt had the message reappear since.

The actuators themselves are well known failure points. Most likely it failed internally, as they often do.

Just noticed this last post Feb/March. I had similar errors and one with the current error. It got stuck down a couple times as well. I do have MES and did lower and clean it. Didn't see to help much. Then I removed the bolts and found it didn't go up very freely. Seemed like the 2 areas where the actuators are were rubbing or even sometimes catching. After messing with it a bit and reconnecting, the errors went away. I'm thinking the splitter can get misaligned and rubs or catches. Not that there seems to be a good way to align it that I can tell. Not a good way to visually see what is happening.
