My driver's side front wheel bearing has decided it's time to go and is whining all the way out. The replacement instructions (knock on wood) seem straight forward except for the ball joint separator. The instructions call out a special tool but I can find all varieties of this thing on Amazon. Can someone point me to one that would fit on the QV to separate the ball joint? Also, if you've done this job before, was removing the bearing a PITA? Thanks!

I'm around 105k miles. Bearings fail over time but I'm not surprised at all this one is bad. Earlier on with the car I hit a massive pot hole on the highway that cracked the wheel and damaged the suspension on this very wheel.

I'm just hoping the bearing comes off without much headache. If not, it's to the shop up the road she goes.

Just did this job. Hardest part was pressing out the lower control arm ball joint from the knuckle. Also getting the bearing out was not a peach. This is what the driver's side wheel bearing looked like at 104k miles. That center is a mount of caked on rust. The bearing had a ton of play in it. After seeing this mess, I will be changing all of the other wheel bearings on the car.

Took about 2.5 hours to change. I think next go around I'll pay.

I've obviously never changed a wheel bearing on this car, but I've changed many wheel bearings, and I've never seen one that looked like that except for ones that were on cars that sat in a flood.

Did that Harbor Freight too do the job?

One last thing to leave here. In January 2025 a wheel speed sensor on the left side (the one that goes with the bearing I just changed) went bad. Error in MES and the dealer pulled was the signal was erratic. Changed the sensor and error went away. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, I got the same error again but from the passenger front wheel. Changed the sensor and error went away. I did the sensor change myself on the passenger side. The sensor was covered in rust. My gut is telling me the speed sensors were fine and the bearings were/are the problem with all the corrosion. The tone ring on these is inside the wheel bearing assembly.

Ha so one more last thing... Last weekend I was driving around and the car went into limp mode with a bunch of abs and stability control errors. Same errors I had with a "bad" wheel speed sensor. I Limp the car home and plug it in to MES and the error was on the front right wheel which I just changed the speed sensor. My gut felt the wheel bearing was bad and caused this.

Fast forward to today and my replacement bearing arrived. I pull the bearing and rust pours out of the cavity and the sensor has flakes of rust all over it. Pictures below. Cleaned up the sensor, cleaned the cavity out, and replaced bearing. No errors when I fired the car up.

Sadly I will be taking this apart again I'm the future because while I was there I noticed the boot around the ball on the strut tensioner was leaking so the boot needs replaced. Yay. I think GMS has posted on here with ball joint boot replacements so I'll reach out.

Lastly some pics of the tool I used to re-seat the tensioner strut and tie rod ball joints. This thing was awesome.

If you run into similar errors and the dealership is telling you to replace speed sensors, I STRONGLY suggest you tell them to change the wheel bearings also unless they show you the sensor is damaged. Especially if you live in an area that sees snow and salt and you daily your high mile Giulia.
