They can replace the VIN on a used ETM with Carplay to use it in an older Giulia?
Yep they do. BUT...
You'd better put few things together 1st.
Let me explain:
1) I bought a used ETM from a wrecked Stelvio, the PN is 50553589 and it has navigation, DAB tuner, the possibility to activate AA, and the rest is like the HW 1st series (just more responsive). IMPORTANT: you need to know the VIN of the vehicle it comes from, but you can also get it attaching it to the car and scanning it with MultiEcuScan
2) I modified my proxy before to install it, and since mine is a Giulia I expanded my proxy from 157 to 250 bytes by changing byte 106 from 9D to FA and filling with zeros the bytes from 158 to 250
3) installed the new double port USB under the arm rest, mine came with the AUX, a normal USB and a USB-C, PN: 156152385, also I installed the USB under the hvac commands (PN 50548751 for the USB port and 156118825 -that I'm still waiting- for the plastic where it gets mounted on)
4) tuned the proxy for the new USBs with MES: entry "Multimedia: external media ports" value Type 4: AUX +2xUSB.
5) sent the newer ETM to Eng-Customs with the old VIN it came with and with the VIN of my car. 180€ is the job cost.
6) tuned again the proxy to allow for the AA/ACP (still with the old ETM installed), Byte 157 from 00 to 35; Byte 161 from 00 to 03; Byte 163 from 00 to 02 and aligned with these values
7) installed the new ETM into my car and realigned the proxy so that it has the same values as from point 6 and as the rest of my car
Now, it went perfectly for a day, then it asked for the unlock antitheft code. This is normal: it senses that the car it's in doesn't look like the one it came from and triggers it.
8) contacted the Alfa part dealer and asked for the code: it costs 80€ and you need to give them the serial of the new ETM, the VIN of your car, a copy/scan of your ID card (and I gave them also the car ownership certificate of my car and the VIN of the car the ETM came from telling them it was a wrecked Stelvio 2.2 diesel from UK, I live in Italy). After 2 weeks or so the card with the code came and I inserted the code in the ETM: and bang, it works flawlessly since then, no more codes asked (which would happen if you didn't do the point 5) upper).
NOW, what is missing?
3 things.
FIRST: Eng-Customs only changed the VIN to match my car in the ETM, but they didn't change the settings for the navigation (they'd have needed my old ETM too, to copy those files), so the maps for my car, that I saved before, were refused from this ETM, regarless the correct and valid license. Also my car has a 6.5 screen, while the Stelvio the ETM came from had the 8.8 one. I'm still not sure if the car would accept (with the correct license) the 6.5' maps.
Anyway, I found a copy of the latest maps that were around without the VIN matching check, which are the maps 1052, downloaded them (the ones for the 8.8' screen) and they went up no problem.
I strongly suspect that, until Eng-Customs manages to replace the navigation setting files in the newer ETM with those from my old one, the only maps it will accept are those with the license for the Stelvio... There must be some file with the VIN somewhere in the Navigation files on the ETM that must be replaced with the one from my old one.
By the way I discovered that the maps for the 8.8' screen work well also on my 6.5' one, even with the 3D parts on:
SECOND: activate the AA/ACP.
THIRD: install a DAB aerial and activate that too with MES by changing the setting for the DAB receiver.
For both 1st and 2nd I have an appointment in Milan the next 14/June with Eng-Customs. I'll bring with me both the ETMs so that they'll be able to do all what is needed (and I know that can be done as another mate I know did the navigation fix too).
For the 3rd I have the antenna here (Macrom M-DAB01.F ) but I want to fix the other 2 points upper, before.
Cheers, Alex
