Sunroof operation Malfunctioning

So this started about 2 weeks ago where out of the 5 function buttons on the sunroof only one was working all of a sudden. The only button that works is the passenger side sunroof button that opens it completely, but you actually had to hold it down and wait for a second or two,and after an audible click, then let go and then hold it down completely to open the sunroof screen and the sunroof itself, it also seems it did not open the sunroof completely.
Dealer said they were aware when I dropped off this morning and I explained the issue. Will update once I pick up the car later tonight and receive the paperwork.
Link for video of issue.

Side Note: The dealer staff loved the car on the Eibach's, and seemed stoked that I had 5600 miles on the car and have been truly enjoying the car as it is meant to.

That's miserable. If the dealer is trying to fix - any thoughts on what may have caused it initially or was it totally random?

UPDATE

I just returned from the dealer not too long ago.
It was basically calibration issue and took literally 1 minute to fix.

In case it happens to your sunroof, just press and hold the passenger side sunroof button(mentioned by the OP) for 1 minute straight.
Shortly sunroof will go into crazy mode opening and closing back and forth.
Once it stops moving then the calibration is complete and everything should work fine again.

I just hope it doesn't keep happening again and again because it would be quite annoying even though it's a simple fix.

Not to resurrect an old thread... but I feel the need to vent and say the sunroof mechanism on the Giulia is... tooo tooo safe. It seems to malfunction quite easily. In my instance, yesterday I had the sunroof already opened to the utmost position slid back. I happened to press the vent button and I can hear the motor try to work then it stops then it started to behave all weird. I was able to close the sunroof, but was not able to open it. Only after reading the manual I found that there's something called the "pinch" feature. The sunroof somehow detected something was "obstructing" it from functioning correctly. If the sunroof ever gets into this state you have to reinitialize it. Not that big of a deal... but there's so much safety precaution on this thing that makes it frustrating at times

My nightmare is that it will go berserk in the rain.

Same issue with mine, sunroof using any of the 5 buttons refused to move. However, there was a click on the shut roof button (passenger side). That meant the fuse was OK. Since my manual is for a car without the sunroof or just an earlier version, no help there! Fortunately we have these forums as I've had the "Service Electronic Throttle/limp mode" issue also. In that case, since I'd read about it ahead of time in the car mags, I was carrying an OBDII to reset the codes (in the middle of no where, New Mexico). I need to get the three software updates to hopefully remedy that which the dealer says takes 3 hours and they couldn't do it at the time I was there for my first $170 oil change--I went 5000 miles not 10000 per the car maintenance program. Don't use adaptive cruise control in "d" or sport mode--I believe it will cause the throttle error.

I was able to "calibrate" the sunroof per the blog and an online copy of the manual. Not totally sure which button did it--meaning I believe I pushed the close roof button on the passenger side, get the click, and then release and push and hold same button. Question is--what little issue is next? And, do little issues mean bigger ones are on the way. If it wasn't such a wonderful car to drive (turbo lag excluded), this freshman level quality control would really be annoying. Dealer personnel are only coming up to speed, and that's being nice.

Just asking why did you pay for the oil change? The first year's maintenance is included and paid for by Alfa. So they should not have charged you. Also here is a link for all the updated manuals (as you can see the owners manual is in it's 4th revision) and users guide that you can download for free, hope maybe this will help;

I had this issue too. I opened the sunroof last week and today I couldn't. How and why it need calibration is a mystery to me. But the reset procedure did work so all is well now.

Something similar just happened to me. The sunroof was stuck in the vent position. Pressing the shade button opened the sunroof all the way, when you tried to close the sunroof with the close button, it would close all the way, then open all the way open again. Through trial and error, I finally got to go back to being in the vent position.

I read the manual, tried the reinitialize procedure, but nothing would happen. Brought it to the dealer yesterday, they tried to reinitialize it, but nothing happened. They gave me a loaner and sent me on my way. Hope to hear something positive on Monday.

I only have 400 miles on it, but still love the car!

Disconnect negative terminal on battery and reconnect.

If it's any consolation, the micro switches on my 360 Spider top get freaky when they get hot. Sometimes the top won't go up right away, especially after a car show. If you put it back down and cycle it a few times it will work fine. Hydraulic fluid is fine, system is fine, motors are fine. It's just 13 years old and microelectronics, logic switches, and moving parts. Like when your computer locks up. Cntrl alt del or reboot. My Galaxy S5 Android phone choked on FB messenger AND Youtube at the same time today. Yeah it's old but we push electronics too hard all the time. Hopefully there is a good fix.

The reset was the first thing I tried, and the first thing the dealership tried. No luck though.

Thanks again to this forum for keeping me informed on these routine issues. After nearly a year with no sunroof problems, today my sunroof froze up. Wouldn’t open or close. No clicking. No nothing. Just dead.
I checked this forum and found this thread. Read about the reinitialization process. Found it in the Manual (which I have in the Alfa app that I also found through this forum.) After 2 or 3 unsuccessful tries, it finally worked on number 4.
Another aggravation resolved without an unnecessary trip to the dealer. Thanks to all.

Thanks ChiGuy, for posting on this thread. I have this same issue, which started last week for no reason. The glass won’t open and the shade screen won’t close, but I can hear a slight clicking noise. I’ve tried searching the forum, but was never able to locate this page.

I called my dealer last week and they said they’d call me back. That was last Tuesday and I still haven’t heard from them, so at least I’ll be able to close the sunshade now, as I normally keep it closed.

Thanks again!

Maybe this would qualify as a sticky since people only stumble upon it if the thread is active ? It saved me a trip to the dealership as well.

I have lived here in the Northern suburbs of Cincinnati (Liberty Township) for about 20 years now and it is a great place to live. Skyline is good stuff and I found out that there is at least one Skyline downtown that serves beer! It's a good place to have a bite to eat on the way to a Reds game. Now, if we could only get the Reds to actually win a few games :)
I'd love to compare your Stromboli Gray Q4 Ti Lusso with my Stromboli Gray Q4 Ti Sport. If your in the area and have any spare time, PM me and I can drive over to Clifton and meet at your favorite place :)
Thanks again for the tip on how to properly re-initialize the sunroof. Hoping this isn't a recurring glitch.

In regards to what causes the issue with the sunroof in the first place I found the below information in the Stelvio forum and it seems to hold true for the Giulia also.

I was having the same issues with my sunroof also... I figured out exactly what triggers it to lose calibration and thought I should share it. It has to do with the layout of the sunroof control switches having no divider between the vent switch and sunshade switch. It is easy to accidentally simultaneously press both the sunshade close switch and vent switch with one finger at the same time. This is what causes it to lose it's mind. I have found that the glass has to be in the closed position and sunshade at the first open position it stops at when you open the shade (not the full open position) when you press both switches. If the glass or shade are in any other positions it seems to be immune to the simultaneous switch press. And yeah when this issue happens I also found the initialization procedure in the owners manual is missing some critical information for it to work right.

Makes sense, given the mayhem that pressing the accelerator and brake pedals simultaneously can unleash.

I just had a total battery failure on my 2018 Guilia. Not really sure what caused the battery to die on 6 month old car! Had to get a car jump started and took it to the dealership with a check engine light on signal. They checked everything and recharged the battery and updated the U76 software and sent the car back to me. The car seemed to be running fo fine but the sun roof won’t function anymore!!! Tried many things but not working till I saw this forum and tried the reset options listed here and after couple of tries it worked!!! Thanks to all who contributed these steps. I’m glad it’s working for me now.

My new Giulia is my first car without a sunroof in at least the last 7-8 auto purchases (or maybe 20 years or so). I am sooo happy to not have a sunroof. I don't think I'll ever have one again; perhaps a convertible, but no more sun roofs. Noise, leaks, hot sun, wind.... just not going there again. Best wishes getting these to play nice.

Reading about all these problems makes me even more envious of you who don't have the sunroof. In the last 10 years I've probably opened a sunroof 50 times. It was one thing I definitely didn't want on my Giulia. Unfortunately my special-ordered car disappeared sometime after it was built and AR could not or would not tell the dealer what happened to it. So I have a sunroof for the next 21 months and then I'll try again. Hopefully i won't have any malfunctions or leaks til then.

I'm with you, John. I didn't want a sunroof but didn't want to wait. So...
