Prepping for Google Maps -- how to update Uconnect?

It's been said that Google Maps will function within CarPlay once iOS 12 rolls out. I read today that Google's app is now compatible, but CarPlay needs to be updated in the car to function with GoogleMaps.

After doing some searching here I'm not sure how to perform this update. I checked with Mopar's site, entered my VIN, and it said that the car should be up to date. I don't know that I believe that since it makes sense to me that Uconnect would, in fact, need a software update.

I selected Updates in the car and it suggested something about prepping an SD card with the update. I have an SD card ready to go but don't know what to do next. Hopefully this isn't a dealer-only update.

iOS 12 is now in public beta, so you can download it and install on your phone. If the Google Maps app is now updated (it wasn't last time I checked about a week ago) and your Carplay is working, then you only need iOS 12 and new Google Maps app. But as always with betas, YMMV.

I have iOS12 on my phone. The Google Maps app is updated and current, but Google Maps doesn't show up in the car. I'd heard that the car's software needed an update in order to communicate with Google (and Wayz). Are we saying that this isn't the case.

The dealership, unsurprisingly, is clueless about this.
