Just remove all bolts and slowly lower one end, its no big deal. I rarely get to drop trans pans that do have a drain.
Its not fun if trans fluid isnt running down your arms into your arm pits.
Well, the job is done. Wasn't too bad - found a perfect sized storage bin to use as a pan. The Christmas decorations that had been in it were relocated. Put my old scissor jack on top of a block of wood inside the bin and held up the pan with it while removing the screws. Left the front corner screws in but loose so I could lower the jack and control the flow out the back end into the bin. Was actually pretty clean through this stage. Drained just over 4 liters out (maybe 4.05) and put just over 5 liters in. Trans oil temp prior to starting the car was 22 deg. C. By the time I had the oil running out of the fill hole again the temp was up to 32 deg. C. After going through the gears the temp was up to 37 deg. C. Probably good enough but I will check level again next week. The only reservation I have is that I didn't feel the transmission actually go into any of the gears - continued to feel like neutral. Maybe I should have taken the parking brake off?

@alfan , what fluid did you use? Have you noticed any difference with the driving experience?

Andy, I used the ZF 8 fluid that came with the kit from FCP. FCP had by far the lowest price for this kit which included 7 liters of fluid, and the new (plastic) pan, new mounting screws, and a new fill plug. Nice kit. Paid $205 USD including tax and shipping. The hardware part of the kit was branded ZF and made in Poland. Haven't driven the car yet but will today.

What is the part number for the kit? As you know, they don't list Alfa. Thanks!

@alfan , FCP also has the 24115A13115 made by "Hengst for ZF" , without the fluid for $110.
Has anyone here used the Valvoline Max-Life ATF that so many BMW folks use in these ZF with reported great results?

Ok. In today's drive I believe I noticed slightly smoother yet crisper shifts. It may be completely psychological since I want to be able to sense a reward for the work(!) but I do think it is a bit better. It is subtle because this has always been the nicest shifting auto transmission I've ever had by far.

Good information, Thank you all!

My Giulia 2.2D AT8 has now 90000 Km and I am sure the ZF automatic transmission was never serviced.
I am planning to do the job myself.

I have a couple of questions, as I am a beginner:

ZF is selling their ZF filter/oil kits for several cars/brands including for my car model.

I understand that the above kits are meant to replace the filter and a part of the total oil inside the transmission.
Is it safe to use it to partially replace the original transmission oil shipped from factory?

For instance, the Giulia 2.2 Diesel engine uses about 9.1 Liters ( about 9.1 quarters) of oil.
However, the above ZF kits ships with just 7 bottles of 1 Liter each.
The method ZF describes will just remove around 4 to 5 liters of original oil and insert around the same amount.

I am not sure if the original 9.1 Liters of oil used at factory is the same type of oil that ZF is now including in their kits.
If they are different, will we have issues when mixing part of the original oil with new different oil?

I understand that there are different colors for transmission oil, depending on brand and type.
What should be correct the oil color to be used in the Giulia models, considering the above concern.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Sounds good. Just be certain that the kit is the correct one for your car.et
Yes, they allow us to type in the car brand, model, and year, to validate the product.
But I was also checking on the ZF website, the kit part numb

I verified that this P/N ZF GETRIEBE 1087.298.365 is the correct kit for my car model.

I have ordered it.
Although I still have to acquire the required tools for the job.

I've used this in many ZFs in BMWs with no problem. Much better price point.
If my Q4 was not still under warranty until 92k miles I would have just bought the Valvoline Max Life transmission fluid, but it is red in color and I think the ZF fluid is amber. So it would be very obvious to a dealer if I took it in for a transmission related warranty service that I did not use an OEM approved transmission fluid.

I ended ordering a pack of 6 quarts of ZF 8 transmission fluid and a ZF transmission filter/pan for way too much money than I needed to for a fluid/filter change. I could have bought 2 gallons(10 quarts) of Valvoline Max Life for about $50 not over $160 as I did for the ZF 8 fluid, but I am still covered by an aftermarket warranty so I decided to to just stick with costly ZF stuff.

However, I may go with Valvoline and an aftermarket pan/filter when I change my transmission fluid again at around 120k miles. My goal is to change the transmission fluid/filter every 60k miles.
