How To Adjust the Harman Kardon System

When I first took delivery of my QV I cranked up the bass setting. I have since figured out that doing this will trash the rest of the sound because the amplifier does not have enough power to drive more base, and also because the sub-woofer does not have its own dedicated amp. Furthermore, the sound coming from the woofers (not the sub-woofer, but the woofers) would sound very muddled and imprecise.

Listed below is a list of the tweaks and settings that I have made to the system, which has had a very positive impact on the sound quality:

1.) Turned off the surround sound option. I think it actually degrades the quality of the sound.

2.) I have not done it yet, but I will eventually replace the rear sub with a larger sub and a dedicated amp.

3.) I reluctantly set the bass setting to "0". The overall sound of the system is better when it is not trying to push so much bass.

4.) I discovered that the sound coming from the dash mounted tweeters is way to loud. This is not surprising considering they are firing directly into the glass, which then sends the sound directly into the driver and passengers ears. If I increased the tweeter setting to something greater than zero so that the overall sound would brighten a little, then the dash mounted tweeters would become even more annoying. I had some very thin round black chair glides that I bought from Home Depot with an adhesive back, and so I placed one of them in the very center of each tweeter. The idea was to reduce the sound coming from the teeters just a little bit, and it actually worked. I will probably look for a more permanent solution later on, but the chair glides actually do not look too bad. Before I installed them I stuck them to my forehead first to degrade the adhesive with body oil so that they will be very easy to remove.

5.) After I did #4 above I was able to increase the tweeter setting to +3, which brightened the overall sound of the system without making the dash mounted tweeters way too loud.

6.) I also found that the mid-range sound seemed to be way too loud, and I figured out that my left ear was getting a huge dose of sound from the middle speaker in the drivers door. I did not notice the same thing when I sat in the passenger seat, but it was very noticeable in the drivers seat. This excess sound from that one speaker in the drivers door also made it difficult to choose a balance from left to right in the car, and it made it difficult to find a good setting for the mid-range sound level. After more listening I finally figured out that the sound from the mid-range speaker was too loud because it was firing directly into the side of the steering column. The sound would essentially be concentrated in that space between the door and the steering column, and as a result the drivers left ear would hear way too much sound from that one speaker. I decided to reduce the sound from that speaker by covering up half of it with clear packing tape. I just stuck a piece of tape on half of the speaker, and then used a razor blade to cut a circular perimeter. The clear tape does not cover up the visual aspect of the speaker; it only reduces the sound. This turned out to the be perfect solution to reduce the excess sound coming from that speaker.

7.) After I solved the problem described in #6 above, I then determined that most optimal balance left to right balance was in the middle with equal sound on each side of the car. Before I covered up a portion of the mid-range speaker in the drivers door it would have been impossible to find a good setting for the balance.

8.) Solving the problem described in #6 also finally made it possible to find a proper setting for the fade from front to back. I think I settled on 2 (or maybe it was 3) clicks to the back of the car.

9.) And then after the balance and fade was set I increased the mid-range sound setting to +2. This setting had always sounded terrible until I solved the problem described in #6 above, but now the +2 setting sounds very good.

I am sure that other people will have different opinions regarding the proper adjustment of this system, but this is an accounting of what made the system sound better to my ears. After doing all of these adjustments I think the system sounds pretty darn good, and has eliminated any desire on my part to spend $4 or $5k on a major after market solution. The only thing I would like to do now is spend some money on a bigger sub-woofer with a dedicated amp.

Just discovered a 'whole new stereo' in my Giulia today!!!
My car is has the H/K upgrade, the performance so far has been subpar.

I was listening to one of my playlists on Spotify.
There is an Equalizer feature in the settings that could be adjusted.
Insane difference!! the highs came out! ultra clear, the mids are already there and lows are not bad.
I'm encouraging many to try it out and post about their opinions.

So what is the system really missing? an inline eq at the signal input of the amp? or a crossover, or a signal processor?

let me know your thoughts

Nice that Spotify has an equalizer feature.
I just did a quick check on iHeart radio and Pandora, and neither seem to have that feature.

For me, I have mainly been listening to the free Sirius we have, while it’s still free.
The biggest issue I have is the speakers rattling from the bass - mainly the front right, and rear left.
I would love to know how to pull the door panels off (without me pulling and searching for screws) so I can tighten and check for loose areas, and maybe add some dynamat.
Anyone hav Ethel procedure or location of the screws - I imagine the cover under the door handle pops off, and the window switch assembly pries out to reveal hidden screws.

The stereo shop that installed my after market system said the audio system they pulled out of my Q4 was cheaper than the ones they see in entry level Hondas. It is never going to sound great with the cheap components and paper speakers they sold us for $900.00. They did however use a halfway decent head unit. the shop estimated the amp, sub and speakers were no more than $100.00 in total
What sound system do you have?

I own an audio store (not car stereo...but been around the block) and the stock speakers are horrible. And it won't play loud. It can be fixed super cheap by adding a small JL Audio wedge box, amp, and Audio Control adapter.

The trick is to then REDUCE the bass going to the car speakers and cross over the sub at about 90-100Hz. It's an amazing upgrade that gets even better if you use a 10 band EQ app on your music source if possible. I'm using an Iphone.

There is little hope for the stock speakers. It's shocking to me how bad they are. But with the sub and EQ it's amazingly decent.

maybe I'm the polyanna here, but I actually think the HK system is pretty good. It won't keep up with a 20k system, but I wouldn't expect it to. I find the sound quality significantly better than the Fender system in the VW golf R I traded out of and also better than the high end system in the last 2 3-series BMWs I had before that. What I really appreciate is the quality of the hands free phone system. In every other car I have been in, I have to yell at the dash to have people hear me and struggle to understand them. With this system, it sounds like they are sitting *on* the dash and we can conduct a normal conversation. I also like some of the small touches, like the speed adaptive volume. for a factory system, I think its pretty good.

I'm with you, I think it's the best factory sound system I've had in a car. I listen to jazz and don't need for my neighbors to hear what music I have on. Plus I have tried to protect my ears my whole life and still have good hearing at my age.

I'm with hunger and riparke

The OP posted excellent advice on how to tune the systems in the early cars. However, the newer systems and/ or upgraded software are a substantial improvement. For example, the sound from the dash speakers and door tweeters in my 2018 TI Sport does not need to be reduced using the clever solutions he described.

I have a high end audio system at home and have installed after market systems in several vehicles. My HK system sounds just fine. Sound quality is limited more by the program source than by the hardware. The size of the speaker magnets and the materials in the speakers do not define sound quality.

The sound quality of my system improved over the first few weeks I owned the car. At first I thought it was my imagination (“It’s frightening what you can get used to”) but, riding in the car for for the first time in a week, my wife asked what I had done to upgrade the system. I have no explanation for the improvement.

The sound level of my system can easily be adjusted to exceed my threshold of pain. If your system won’t produce high volume sound, make sure you have the latest updates.

I am reminded of an old cartoon. Two men are sitting in a concert hall listening to a performance. One turns to the other and says, “ It needs more bass and the mid range lacks definition”.

my car is new, thus maybe the difference from the original systems. What i notice is very good definition in the mid range. I have heard some guitar riffs that I never hear in an automotive system. On the downside, the bass lacks punch and is sometimes a bit buzzy. Dedicated sub would definitely help. My VW used the entire spare wheel tub for the amp and sub. What are we going to do now that manufacturers have given up on spare wheels entirely??

I have a new Ti with the HK and I'm so far disappointed with the sound, compared to the HK 19-speaker system in my Jeep Grand Cherokee...seems as though I can't escape the midrange, it's just overpowering. The center dash speaker sounds awful, and to my ears the sound is even further degraded (i.e. even more midrange in the center) when turning OFF surround. Really don't want to put thousand(s) more into improving the stereo. I'll just keep tweaking it until my ears give up and accept it.

Oh, and count me in on the passenger door speaker rattle.

The worst part with the rattles (in my case it's the window controls on both doors) is that while I'm tempted to pull the door cards to do something about that rattle, I fear that I'll just end up with others from having taken it apart. It's going in week after next for its service interval (and hopefully infotainment updates, since I've mentioned about how it likes to lose my favorites and will sometimes randomly shut off...) so maybe I can get them to address the door rattles as well. I'd love a proper subwoofer in there, but until the rattles are gone, that's all a sub would really do is increase the rattling. (I miss the Audison gear I had in my GLK - sub and amp in the spare tire well, factory head unit through a bit-one. Hertz speakers throughout)

The HK system in the loaded up Stinger I had for a week was truly awful. You'd adjust it to sound good on Spotify, and then HD radio would be intolerable. Could not dial it in.

The two things I miss from my MK7 (other than the hatch) are the Panasonic sound system, which was better than it really had any right to be, and the absurdly good dynamic headlights.

When I had mine in for the T57 update, I asked the service manager to take a look at my passenger door speaker because it buzzed at lower frequency ranges.
He wrote in the service report that he was able to re-produce the problem, and therefore replaced the whole speaker.
Unfortunately, the problem is now SUBSTANTIALLY worse. It buzzes at all frequency ranges, even when someone is merely speaking. It is driving me crazy. I wish I never mentioned it.

@ChiGuy: Thanks for the warning. I was noticing some rattling in certain tracks and was going to bring it up to the dealership when she is in for the fuel pump replacement. Now I am thinking, maybe be happy with what you go. I am thinking it is not the speaker but something else is rattling in the door. I am going to play with it a bit and see if I can isolate it and try the OP route.

Are mileage is about the same. Maybe some items are loosening up. Sounds like maybe we should trouble shoot this. Someone did have some insulation added to the doors on one of the posts. Right now I am just starting to figure it out. The weather has reached that “I can now go work on the car phase” or maybe it is because the weather has cooled off and is making the plastics harden. Keep me posted on your fixes.

I am planning on installing some sound deadening material that will stop the inertia sensor noise and while I do that, will also see if there is anything that is loose enough to rattle. Will keep you posted.

Same here, HK system rattling the drivers door. I don’t want to have the dealer look at it as I assume they are likely to make it worse if they take apart the door panel. Thinking about it there’s a lot of stuff in the drivers door and It’s not easy to make everything tight enough to handle the dynamic pressure changes of a decent mid/bass driver.
I’ve been trying to get an idea of what’s rattling. I thought it may be the controls with the window switch’s and mirror adjust, it seems to make it better sometimes (not always) when I press on that. It’s probably internal though.

So happy I found this post. I turned off my surround sound and the sound is so crisp now. I got the premium audio, but it always sounded so muffled so I was very disappointed but this was amazing, thank you!!

Another member posted this, might be of interest. Since I am new, I still have yet to figure out how to quote or mention posts/members so here is the link - https://www.giuliaforums.com/forum/1001-audio-stereo/32073-one-place-stereo-upgrade-options.html
