I've been corresponding with a shop in Arizona that has developed and is testing a controller that allows you to open the exhaust flaps completely (as in race mode) in any mode. Here's the response below. You should feel free to contact them...it may make them speed up the development if there's a lot of interest:

Hello Simon,

I am testing the controller on two Guilia’s at this time. The first test (from an owner in the Netherlands) has come back with positive results. I made a minor adjustment to the controller configuration and am conducted a second test (with an owner in the USA), that should have results within 2 weeks or so.

Preliminary results is that the controller will only be able to provide two modes of operation …
1. Normal (the car’s ECU controls the exhaust flap valves just it does now)
2. Always Open … you will have ability to open force the flapper valves open at all times.

The controller has the ability for a third function … Always Closed … however, in the first test when this option was enabled, the sensors in the exhaust detected too much back pressure when in RACE mode, forced an immediate Check Engine Light warning. This only occurred in RACE mode. In the second test, the Always Closed option is disabled and a different car is used for this evaluation. I am fairly confident that the second level of testing will be successful.

In summary, it is likely that for the Guilia, only two modes will be enabled (Normal and Open). This should not be a problem because when you want to have the valves closed, switching to normal mode and reducing the engine RPM will cross the threshold where the ECU will close the valves. Normally, you would want this when going fairly slow anyway.

The only disadvantage is that the Always Closed option has been a desirable option for people who track their cars at venues that limit the sound level. It is appearing that for the Guilia, I won’t be able to offer this option as the car’s sensors don’t seem to like it. Throwing a Check Engine Light will not be option for most owners. But, with the Always Open option, you will have the option to keep the valves open for that throaty exhaust note at low or high engine RPM levels.

I will notify you when I have the product ready for sale.

Kind regards,

Steve Bisel

I highly recommend Madness Autoworks for sales and installation of the Forza Controller. They have a good shop and skilled techs. Not only have they installed the Forza controller on the Alfa Giulia, but also on Ferrari's. If you are in the Austin or LA, area, give them a visit. Of course, if you are not near them, the Forza controller can be installed as a DIY project.

If anyone has any questions or concerns about installation, please let me know so that I can answer your questions.

Does the installation of this controller void the Alfa Romeo Warranty?

just got my ride Monday. I think this is going to have to be a must have for me. Way cheaper than swapping exhaust systems and seems pretty straight forward since there doesn't appear to be any splicing of wires when I quickly looked at the instructions. Anyone do it themselves yet or has everyone gone to a shop for their install? I have installed CAI intakes on a dodge dart, removed underbody panels on a RS so my skills are average. Is a lift necessary or could this be done by backing the car up on race ramps?

I have created a document for installing the controller on the Q.V. here is the link ... http://forzacomponenti.com/documents/alfa guilia.pdf

It was written for the Model B2A, but is no different than the current model B3A.

I like to think of these instructions as “dynamic” ... that is, I want to make updates when appropriate. If anyone has a suggested edit, or has some photos that might add to clarity, any tips, etc. ... please pass them my way.

Steve

All All,

In reading through postings here on the forum, I noticed some people stated they got error lights when using the remote in certain modes (RACE and DYNAMIC).

Back in late October, it was brought to my attention by a customer in Switzerland that he was getting error codes. His car is a manual transmission car and that option is not offered in the US. While working with his situation, we arrived at a simple solution which has been verified works and eliminates error lights. As I had not been aware of errors with automatic transmissions, I forwarded the fix to known manual transmission owners. I also merged in the fix into controllers made after October 27, 2017.

OK, fast forward to present ... I am now learning that some you have seen errors on your cars when operating the controller. I am speculating that in these cases you ordered your controller before October 27th. Or you ordered it from Madness Autoworks and they may have provided the controller from their stock which was made prior to October 27th.

The fix is quite simple. It involves installing a small resistor across two screw terminals inside the controller module. I am going to send an email to all registered customers who have controllers that this affects. So, look for that email. Or, you can send me a PM here on the forum. Here are the details you need to be aware of:

  • Affects the Model B2A only.
  • Made prior to October 27, 2017
  • Does not affect the Model B3A
Installation of the resistor takes less than 15 minutes and requires only a small screwdriver. Once I have your mailing address, I will send you the resistor along with detailed instruction on how to install it inside the controller. If anyone prefers, we can perform the upgrade here ... but that requires you send your controller module to me. If you prefer this, I will send you an adapter plug for the cable connector so that once your controller is removed, it will maintain electrical continuity for your car's vacuum solenoid valve so you will not get a check engine light. This allows you to keep the connector cable as it is and you won't have to disconnect it from the vacuum solenoid valve ... which is pain as you have remove the belly pan to access the connector at the solenoid valve.

Regards,

Steve

I have sent out upgrade kits to everyone that I have a record of who purchased one of the potentially affected Model B2A controllers. Should be in your mailbox in next few days (3 to 4 days domestic US and 7 to 10 days international). If anyone is unsure if they will be getting an upgrade kit, drop me a line.

Regards,

Steve

Agreed. This is the type of pro-active customer support that entices me to choose one company over another. No matter who designs/builds/sells a product, there is always the possibility of a problem down the road. Support down the road is important to me!

It would be nice to have a clip option on the remote so it could be clipped to the visor like the k40 remote. The K40 has a small adapter that allows the remote to clip to the visor. Would make it much more practical to use. I would definately pay extra to have a small black remote that would clip under the visor.

Yes I know I could program the homelink button but I live in a gated community and have all of mine used already for gates and garage.

I bought some silicone hose and inline valves which are reachable by sliding your arm into the narrow slit like vents in the rear bumper next to the exhausts. I can now turn the system on and off by reaching in on each side and turning a vlave (takes all of 5 seconds each side). There was even a bracket in there to ziptie the valves to make it work well. In truth however I leave the valves open all the time, the car just sounds great that way IMO but if I were really concerned I can shut them off...

No issues, as the mod is just removing the vacuum lines from the solenoid and plugging them. The computer doesn't know the difference since the solenoids are mechanical devices with no electrical function, and is easily restored to stock by simply plugging the vacuum lines back in prior to a trip to the dealer.

I thought I would pass some thoughts on forcing the valves open at all times ...

The easiest and lowest cost method is to disconnect the vacuum lines at each of the bypass valve actuators. MAKE SURE YOU PLUG THE LINES or you will have a massive vacuum leak. Also, put a bit of hose over the nipple on the actuator itself and plug that bit of hose as well. This will keep debris from getting in.

Disconnecting the vacuum lines will not allow you to easily toggle back and forth between open and closed. There will likely be times when you want to tone down the exhaust noise ... although I am sure there are some who may disagree. I would bet that if the local constable is hovering over your car, you may not want to have it too loud. Anyway, if you want to toggle between loud and soft, I invite you to review the Forza exhaust controller here ...

If anyone has any questions, contact me and I will try to answer as best I can.

Test drove a QV yesterday, left with just a bag of coffee. Definitely getting one. Thinking this will be the first and “hopefully only” mod that finds its way to the car.

This is sweetness that can be linked to your home link buttons. Get one. You get extra barks for free when the boost valve closes. Even A mode sounds awesome :D
