Crazy Electrical Problems

I have a 2017 Giulia and after driving it 25 minutes at highway speeds, the electrical system started to malfunction while on the way to the airport. Headlights, Brake Lights, Turn Signals, Collision Avoidance all stopped working while driving down the road. I pulled into a parking lot and indeed, all of those lights were not working. I drove the car the remaining mile to the airport and parked it. Upon return to town 4 days later the car was dead, battery fully drained.

I towed the car to the Alfa dealer and they promptly charged the battery (it tested fine), and the alternator (tested fine) said I must have left a light on that caused the low voltage and charged me $40. I don't understand how the battery could get drained to the point of shutting off portions of the electrical system while driving it at highway speeds. The dealer could not explain it either and I believe just did not believe my story.

So I drive the car home and now notice that one of the two reverse lights (white lights in the middle of the brake lights) is on all the time. When running, when off, when doors locked, when unlocked. Unless I disconnect the battery, the light will not go off. I'm going to be taking it back to the dealer on Monday but they seem to have no idea where to look so looking for thoughts and ideas.

Thanks

After performing the usual component tests, look for rodent damage. Chewed wires shorting to each other, or ground.

We had this once on my wife’s Prius. A mouse chewed a front wheel sensor cable in two rendering a few systems disabled and warnings galore. The fix was fortunately as simple as replacing the sensor with cable.

Worst case you have a problem with the body computer, this controls the lights etc......

I seem to recall people talking about water getting into the BC in 1 or 2 cases, I'd give that a check. The bodycomputer is located in the box with fuses in the passenger footwell.

edit: just saw your update ;)

Same problems but worse!

I had the same crazy electrical problems after having the car about 3 months... took it in they serviced it and refreshed computer and it looked/seemed like it was all ok... only to come back a short time after to have another "service electronic throttle body" light come on... took it in they did about the same thing and then said it should be fixed ad good to go... however, this happened again right at the 10,000 mile mark and i had to bring it in for service and this "service electronic throttle body" light again... they then refreshed the computers again, checked "everything" they said and then at about 18,000 miles had this happen again! So I took it in they fixed it AGAIN...which actually means they just refreshed the computer again...

Sure enough, you can already guess what happens next! I then had the "service electronic throttle body" light again and took it in for my 2nd regular service 20,000 miles mark, they give me the car back and say they check literally everything this time and the car is running perfect with no warning lights on...

SO HERE IS WHEN IT GETS REALLY DANGEROUS AND SKETCHY!!!!

Im driving the car in san diego near balboa park and turn onto thorn st. which is not a crazy busy street thank god... AND as im approaching the stop sign about 45ft from the stop sign going about 18 mPH my car throws itself into park adn ell electrical shorts out like someone pulled the plug on the battery or car!!! IT WAS CRAZY! the car literally came to a screeching halt! THEN THE WORSTE THING WAS... im stranded in the middle of the semi busy street at night with no electrical working what so ever... the doors wouldn't lock or unlock, I COULDN'T EVEN TURN MY FLASHERS ON and coulnt open the trunk to get the reflector triangle out to put behind my car!

IT WAS SO SCARY! so my wife had to uber to get her car downtown to park behind mine with flashers on so no one hit my car! while waiting for the tow truck to show up!

As anyone else would feel, I never want to get back in that car again and dont feel comfortable driving another giulia quadrifoglio ever again! I want a full refund, and have started the process with alfa cares which is what you immediately have to do!

you can read about this other placed on this forum which have helped guide me in what to do to get my money I've spent on this car refunded!

Scary for sure. A bit weird too as I just had my battery totally die and no electrical while sitting in the car - doors locked but not running. I was able to just pull the handle to get out. I also reached across to the passenger door, which was locked too and pulled the handle from the inside to open that one. Maybe I was just lucky...

Vanderweil can I ask why you didn't bother calling 911 instead of uber? The police or fire department would have put out fire sticks so YOU didn't cause an accident. That would have been the prudent thing to do. You put other peoples lives in danger. How did you get out of your car because the unlock and trunk didn't work?? 20,000 miles in an early 2017 Misano or Rosso QV means a lot of good miles. Also, Do you have You Tube videos out there you look familiar? The word SKETCHY is exactly what I was thinking.

There is a known bulkhead gasket fault which allows water to run behind it onto the wiring loom and from there to the Body Control computer and short out various pins causing all sorts of weird electrical faults. My car was in the shop 3 months being re-wired. I now have had another 5 weeks off the road with what the dealer tells me was a 'battery fault'. This was a completely dead battery, that would charge up ok off the car , the alternator output was fine, but if left over a few days would discharge but they couldn't find out why. They put a new battery on and tested all and it seems ok but 5 weeks to remedy this is a joke.
