Happy Holidays Everyone!

Apparently I was on the nice list this year and I received a Uniden R8 Radar Detector! I am super stoked! Decided I would share my thoughts and first impressions with fellow speed enthusiasts and anyone considering this unit for their Giulia.

First Impression: The detector comes very nicely packaged. Cardboard product box includes the hard carry case with all necessities and the instruction manual. Inside the hard carry is as follows:
  • Detector within a soft cover pouch
  • Windshield suction cup mount
  • Dashboard Mount
  • USB to Micro USB cord
  • Cigarette Style Power Connection
An optional bonus that I received was the hardwire kit to power directly from the fuse box. The unit mounts via a quick slide on rail and clicks into place. Mute/Dim and Mark (GPS) buttons are conveniently place on the front of the unit while the Menu, Volume Up/Down, and Power are mounted on the top. Solid plastic body. I am unable to comment on the size as this is my first detector.

Setup: I began by downloading the Uniden R Series Tool and updated the unit to the most recent firmware using the USB to Micro USB cord. This software also allows you to change all your settings on your computer which is nice. I set up my expert settings according to VortexRadar's guide on his website and his Youtube video. I am located in Northern California, greater Sacramento area, where we mainly get hit with KA segment 5 (34.587 – 34.803, mainly 34.7), and very rarely KA segment 8 (35.379 – 35.613, rural counties). Laser is extremely hot in the area too from California Highway Patrol so laser jammers are fairly high on my wish list. I wanted to set up my KA segments rather wide so I can manually narrow them down over time as I become more acquainted with the frequencies in my area. This is a bit unnecessary as California Law Enforcement is pretty spot on with their equipment being in spec but this is the route I went. I set my Ka Band Segmentations to the broad suggested settings as follows, enabled: 2 (33.705 – 33.903), 4 (34.191 – 34.58), 5 (34.587 – 34.803), 6 (34.803 – 35.163), and 8 (35.379 – 35.613). Segments 4 and 6 are usually enabled to catch those radar guns that fall out of spec for segment 5. All other settings were set according to the guide.

First Drive: I took a short 25 minute drive to get a quick quick feel for the unit. Unfortunately, I did not run into any law enforcement so I didn't get a taste for any Ka Band pops but I did pick up a couple false alerts on K band from local medical imaging buildings I passed to which I marked on GPS with the mark button. My intent is to follow up with this post as I commute to work with the Quad on occasion.

Summary: As my first radar detector, I am looking forward to my overall and long term experience with this high end unit. The Uniden R8 is packed with features and seems very high quality based on the build quality and OLED display. Expert Mode allows you complete control of your unit and to dial it in based on your area. This gift could not come at a better time as I just had a law enforcement interaction the night before (Christmas Eve and he let me go). A question to my fellow Giulia and radar detector owners, with the cigarette style power port being in the center console storage area, how do you have your units powered as the included cord is a bit shorter than I would like? Feel free to share your thoughts and set ups!

Kind Regards,

I used to have a max 360 and now a redline 360c. I bought the additional straight power cord for the 12v plug vs. the coiled cord that came with it.

I've only ever owned escort, but consensus is that the r8 is a better detector at detecting vs. redline 360c, but rl360c has more features, e.g. better lockouts, Bluetooth, etc. Fwiw I didn't do much research when buying my RL, but in hindsight I probably should have since I probably would have gotten the r8, although back then it was the r7.

If you have the infrared windshield on your car, I don't, how does that impact your radar performance. Consensus seems to be mixed on that subject.

Interesting, I was not aware of the solar windshield making an impact. That is definitely something I am curious to monitor as I put on more miles with the detector. Will report back if I make an observations. Thanks for the heads up. I went ahead and purchased a flat cable myself. Planning to implement the the new cable immediately and route is as discretely as possible.

Looks great! Design and size wise it looks very similar to the R7 but sounds like it has a few more features built in. I bought my R7 just over 2 years ago before my road trip from Boston to CA and it has done it's work saving my ass. I have been highly impressed with the detection range of the R7, so I imagine the R8 will be even better. I'm in the bay area and yes KA is what every cop has been running here.

I've also loved the automute memory feature which has done a nice job muting the same k-band speed signs I pass without me even having to mark them.

Just an FYI but while radar detectors aren't illegal in CA, anything mounted to your windshield technically is so they can give you trouble for that. I also still use the suction cup windshield mount, but will be looking at getting the mirror mount soon.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the obstruction of the windshield being an issue with law enforcement. I have had quite a few interactions with law enforcement during my time driving so maybe one day I'll get to experience if it is brought up by the officer. Not completely immune to drawing attention with the R8 as dark window tint and no front plate are present so we will see in the long run. Since you're in California, do you run Ka Segmentation?

I'm also interested in the impact of the solar windshield. I have a V1 that I used with my previous car and love it; but when I started researching mounting options in the giulia, I also ran across the infrared / solar windshield question. My Lusso has the solar windshield so trying to figure out if this is an issue before purchasing a wiring kit.

Thanks for sharing. Highly considered the V1 G2 when I was doing some light research a few months back. How do you like the Blendmount in comparison to the windshield mount? Do you have the unit mirror tapped or hardwired?

That was the sole reason I did not get the infrared windshield, and other "goodies" that came with that package. So no ldw, acc, or auto high beams for me.

I did ask on escorts radar forum and the consensus there was infrared windshields are a no no, but later searching (years later) had mixed opinions fwiw

Mirror Tapped, with Blendmount I never have to worry about it falling- liked it so much it is now in all of our cars except the 4C.

Ditto my V1 G2, mirrror tap in the QV and hardwired in my 993. Amazing range boost from G1 to G2 and no issues. I like the window mount with suction cups, no issues. Both above the mirror on driver’s side, slightly aimed down to ‘see’ the rear window.
Yes, big difference between G1 and G2 in range and reduced false alerts- Enough of a difference that I sold the rest of the G1s we had across cars and bought G2s.
