I've been corresponding with a shop in Arizona that has developed and is testing a controller that allows you to open the exhaust flaps completely (as in race mode) in any mode. Here's the response below. You should feel free to contact them...it may make them speed up the development if there's a lot of interest:

Hello Simon,

I am testing the controller on two Guilia’s at this time. The first test (from an owner in the Netherlands) has come back with positive results. I made a minor adjustment to the controller configuration and am conducted a second test (with an owner in the USA), that should have results within 2 weeks or so.

Preliminary results is that the controller will only be able to provide two modes of operation …
1. Normal (the car’s ECU controls the exhaust flap valves just it does now)
2. Always Open … you will have ability to open force the flapper valves open at all times.

The controller has the ability for a third function … Always Closed … however, in the first test when this option was enabled, the sensors in the exhaust detected too much back pressure when in RACE mode, forced an immediate Check Engine Light warning. This only occurred in RACE mode. In the second test, the Always Closed option is disabled and a different car is used for this evaluation. I am fairly confident that the second level of testing will be successful.

In summary, it is likely that for the Guilia, only two modes will be enabled (Normal and Open). This should not be a problem because when you want to have the valves closed, switching to normal mode and reducing the engine RPM will cross the threshold where the ECU will close the valves. Normally, you would want this when going fairly slow anyway.

The only disadvantage is that the Always Closed option has been a desirable option for people who track their cars at venues that limit the sound level. It is appearing that for the Guilia, I won’t be able to offer this option as the car’s sensors don’t seem to like it. Throwing a Check Engine Light will not be option for most owners. But, with the Always Open option, you will have the option to keep the valves open for that throaty exhaust note at low or high engine RPM levels.

I will notify you when I have the product ready for sale.

Kind regards,

Steve Bisel

Yes. Flaps can be always open in D, N or A. It can be activated by holding the button on front of gear selector for 2 seconds. The same if you want to close the valves (they will still open automatically if the car chooses to). It also remembers which setting it was in when you switch off ignition so your choice if you want start up with flaps closed or full anti-social mode (y)

Hello, just saw the discussion and I'd like to share my experience.
I bought some time ago a small device which connects to the OBD port and allows to open/close the vales any time.
In addition it allows you to display some additional info on the main instrument cluster (like Boost pressure, Brakes temperature, Gearbox and Diff oil temperature, 0-100 times). It allows as well a Launch Control function.
Well, the object is not super cheap, but is VERY nice and practical (there is no installation whatsoever as you just have to plug it in the ODB). It is produced by Squadra Tuning and its name is Performance Logger (as it is also logging some performance data  )
Here below some pictures of the info you can display (taken directly form the instruction manual):

Just thought I would add my $0.02 worth ... I am personally reluctant to install devices that interface with the car's ECU internal programming. I do not have reason to believe that this device may cause problems, but any device that requires interfacing to the car's ECU internal programming is subject to the version of the installed software. Should the manufacturer upgrade the software (and they do), there is a possibility that the device may no longer function. Or, at worse, may cause a problem with the car's operation. Should Alfa Romeo upgrade the software and this OBD device no longer functions (or functions incorrectly) there is no assurance from Alfa or the device manufacturer of getting a fix. Just saying.

With the valves open all the time, there will be a slight reduction in overall back pressure within the exhaust system. This slight reduction in back pressure has some people believing that there will be a slight loss in engine torque that is produced at lower RPMs. For example, the amount of torque available when accelerating away from a traffic light. In practice, though, the reduction in back pressure will not affect the torque because the exhaust bypass valves are so far downstream in the exhaust system it will not affect the scavenging affect at the exhaust headers, therefore, any loss of torque would be infinitesimal. If want to read more, here is document that I wrote on the topic ...

many modern European cars (or at least the high performance ones…not sure of the rules there) have a cold start cycle When the cats are cold pollution is at its highest, so they inject air into the system to rapidly heat the cats. once the cats are heated due in large part to this, the idle sounds become normal. This lasts for around 20 seconds or so…. some cars do it even longer. This is common on many European cars.
With the flaps open, the difference is more pronounced. I have a miitek exhaust and have the flaps set to open always and the cold starts are very loud and gritty sounding. It’s actually not a nice sound in my opinion. but once the cycle stops it gets better..and quieter.

some aftermarket tunes disable it if desired. well, for some cars at least… not sure if there’s a tume that disables it on the alfa…but for cars like a bmw its easy to get something to disable it if desired.

Question to those of you with the Forza. I've got the b3a (the model that only defaults to ecu default on start up) with remote that has only buttons A and B on it.

I searched on the Forza website and only found documentation for the b4a, and only for non turbo cars which has four buttons.

I believe A returns to ecu default valve operation and B opens the exhaust, but can someone please confirm for me?

Also does anyone know how to change the battery on the remote?

I like (and have) the Forza since it doesn't require a device in the obdii by your knees. But then the squadra offers more features
