I've been corresponding with a shop in Arizona that has developed and is testing a controller that allows you to open the exhaust flaps completely (as in race mode) in any mode. Here's the response below. You should feel free to contact them...it may make them speed up the development if there's a lot of interest:

Hello Simon,

I am testing the controller on two Guilia’s at this time. The first test (from an owner in the Netherlands) has come back with positive results. I made a minor adjustment to the controller configuration and am conducted a second test (with an owner in the USA), that should have results within 2 weeks or so.

Preliminary results is that the controller will only be able to provide two modes of operation …
1. Normal (the car’s ECU controls the exhaust flap valves just it does now)
2. Always Open … you will have ability to open force the flapper valves open at all times.

The controller has the ability for a third function … Always Closed … however, in the first test when this option was enabled, the sensors in the exhaust detected too much back pressure when in RACE mode, forced an immediate Check Engine Light warning. This only occurred in RACE mode. In the second test, the Always Closed option is disabled and a different car is used for this evaluation. I am fairly confident that the second level of testing will be successful.

In summary, it is likely that for the Guilia, only two modes will be enabled (Normal and Open). This should not be a problem because when you want to have the valves closed, switching to normal mode and reducing the engine RPM will cross the threshold where the ECU will close the valves. Normally, you would want this when going fairly slow anyway.

The only disadvantage is that the Always Closed option has been a desirable option for people who track their cars at venues that limit the sound level. It is appearing that for the Guilia, I won’t be able to offer this option as the car’s sensors don’t seem to like it. Throwing a Check Engine Light will not be option for most owners. But, with the Always Open option, you will have the option to keep the valves open for that throaty exhaust note at low or high engine RPM levels.

I will notify you when I have the product ready for sale.

Kind regards,

Steve Bisel

I like the ability to control it. The sound is different as you pass through the gears with flaps open vs ECU controlled. It could just be me but i feel like there is a grunch more torque in ECU mode but someone thought it should be just the opposite. I am just going to give the engineers at Alfa some credit and think that they thought through. As you are racing through the RPMs it is different. Also, she can get a bit loud through the neighborhood so there are some real advantages to controlling it and having the option to go back and forth.

I wonder about zero chances to get any warning. Maybe not but I am just paranoid but I don’t plan to always have the flaps open since I don’t know any better and use it like a fun thing to do when I want rather than all one or all the other. Indecisive as I am this is the best option for me

I have had the exhaust controller on now for a few weeks and find it a blast. I have it sync with home link and works terrific. Whenever I have the feeling for a little more note I just press the button on the visor. Pretty pleased with the result. A very inexpensive option vs exhaust mod. I did have a chance to hear a 2.0 Giulia with the centerline exhaust mod and it was loud and sounded very cool but the nice thing with this is I only will irritate the neighbors when I feel like it with the press of a button. I did hear the mod exhaust has a deeper note but not loud on the QV so I would be happy to look at that. I am keeping on eye on the classifieds to see if someone that is giving up on the QV is selling their exhaust.)

Guys.
Remember to order the B4A version if you want flaps open at start up.
The E3 version will close flap when car is turn off....

First time I heard of Seletron. I went over and reviewed their web site.

First, Seletron is an Italian company and it appears that their main forte is as a manufacturer of tuning kits for cars. They have various chips for various cars. From what I have been able to find, everything I read is pretty positive.

One unique feature that I found to be excellent is that their tuning kit does not replace the car's ECU. It is installed near the ECU and it intercepts the signal cable coming into the ECU then outputs a modifying signal back into the ECU. Their tuning chip makes adjustments to fuel trim, turbo boost, etc. One reviewer says easy to install and no warning lights, etc. All indications are this is a quality product.

It appears that their exhaust controller works similarly. That is, the signal to/from the car's ECU is intercepted allowing the driver to manually control the exhaust valves or return control back to the car. Very slick solution. Their controller cost € 399 ($446 at today's exchange rate). The Forza controller costs € 264 ($295).

From what I can find out, Seletron products appear to be good quality, they have good reviews and would likely satisfy Alfa owners. So, it appears that we have two choices for exhaust controllers and a new player on performance enhancements. I particularly like the fact that their products, like the Forza controllers, are plug and play and you can easily remove them if you need to take the car to the dealer for warranty work.

For anyone just interested in a DIY mod to have the flaps open all the time like I did, you can just get these 1/4 inch inline shut off valves that go in sprinkler hoses and a bit of extra sprinkler hose and use them to make a manual always unbaffled or stock mode switch. It only takes about 30 mins to install as i found out doing it today and now i have the "race" sound in all modes, "a", "n", "d" and "Race". I did it exactly as he did in the video and It work great.

In retrospect, i want to go back and make on change now; What he did was to plug the hose and leave the nipple on the exhaust baffle uncovered which leaves it exposed to debris. I'm gonna get some sprinkler hose and connect the other end of the shut off valve to the original hose location on the baffle with the shut off in the off position. This will allow me to switch them on/off as needed and prevent debris in the baffle part.

[NOTE: Forum thinks my links are spam so read and follow instructions to find links]

Parts:
Home Depot: "1/4 in. In-Line Shut Off Valve (2-Pack)" - $1.97

I saw this guy do it on YouTube and followed along:
Search YouTube for "$3 Mod Alfa Romeo Giulia Exhaust."

My shop put the forza on the raised grid pattern on the floor of that box but they cut out some of the raised plastic so that it sits flush with the floor and so they could route the cables from the grommet. This provided the most surface area to adhere the forza to and keeps it flat.

Keep in mind this is the same shop that left a wrench in my engine bay when they installed my Sprint filter, so ??‍♂

I have no idea why they went to the trouble of cutting out some of the raised plastic floor when a nice flat smooth surface is available on the sides of fuse box well.

Installation is quite easy. Here are detailed instructions.

You can do this without a lift, although obviously an advantage. Also, this easy enough as a DIY project.

Should you feel more comfortable with an auto shop performing the work, any decent shop will easily be able to do this. I also recommend asking a high end audio shop as well.

I did the Home Depot valve mod. I used also some 1/8” ID silicone tubing to complete the loop so that I can restore factory operation just by reaching into the wheel well and turning a valve on each side.
It took ten minutes per side. I don’t get why someone needs a controller. The sound is not too loud at cold start up, shouldn’t bother the neighbors.
Cost 10 dollars and took twenty minutes and I can switch it back to factory in 20 seconds should I ever want to.

Just FYI. We had our Forza installed at the dealership simply out of convenience. I can say the programming to my outer buttons on the visor is cool. I didn’t want a permanent change and the Forza gives us the best of both worlds. We are still loving it. It has been a happy 2 years with the QV. She was one of the fist 2017 additions.

Regarding the OBD options, I personally don't like:
1. the parastic current draw. These cars already are known for this, now with an OBD module running full time (even with its sleep mode), it's going to require a battery tender.
2. The need for a secure gateway (I have a 2019) full-time to use it.
3. the look of it hanging down like that... I guess you can use an OBD port extension cable and tuck it away somewhere though.

I am happy with the home depot hack :) I just had the Milltek installed and I will say that the cold start is now getting close to loud enough to make the neighbors notice... oh well, it's only a few seconds.

I think I'm going for the manual version this weekend. If you go the method with the extra "plug" sprinkler valve at the end, that keeps everything in closed loop so you don't have an exposed hose collecting debris correct?

Also- can someone link me to the best silicone tubing on Amazon for this? Trying to order today so it can arrive this weekend but every time I find one that looks good for this I find a review about how it melted or some other horror story. Thanks all!

I had to use 1/8" tubing, the 1/4" was too big to fit over the valving. I got it from ebay. It fit nicely over the sprinkler valve, as silicone tubing stretches nicely.

I put the valve near the wheel well opening so that I restore factory operation in a few seconds if desired by just reaching behind the wheels and turning the valves.

Did this mod a couple days ago. Love the sound and it couldn't have been easier.

Thanks to everyone that contributed!

Update; I did a mod of the $3 method.
Disconnected the vacuum tube and ran one 1/8 silicone tube to above the rear bumper "hex grill" and zip tied the shut off valve there.
Then ran another tube back to the flap actuator mechanism.
Now I have easy access to the shut off valve so can turn on/off the bypass to suit my mood.
I can also shut off either side individually for whatever reason.
Took awhile to figure out the routing and the hoses may sag over time but now I have the plan figured out.
The hoses may sag onto the exhaust but next time I'd run longer hoses under the exhaust.
As is I bought the 10' hose listed on the ebay link in this thread #381.
Next time 20' should be more than enough to run under the exhaust.
Black would be better too as some of the tube is visible behind the car where the shut off valves are zip tied to the rear grille.

Sorry dont know how to link photos :(

But here is the tubing that is black and high temp;
EDIT the clear listed above has a 500 degree temp limit vs the 350 in the black.
Even if the clear tubes sag they may not be affected by the exhaust pipes.
Time will tell .
If they melt through they will melt into the "Open flap position".
