Exhaust Valve Sound Controller (DONGLE PLUG)- Giulia/Stelvio Quad.

Quadrifoglio Exhaust Sound Controller:

One of the nicest features of the Giulia Q are the switchable exhaust valves. As soon as they are in the open position, the Ferrari V6 clears a throat that bleaches the late Mr. Pavarotti. In short SPECTACLE !. But unfortunately Alfa Romeo software engineers have not thought about when the valves should be open or closed.

It is logical that the valves must be permanently open in Race mode, but not everyone always wants to ride in Race to enjoy the sound. The enthusiastic switching behavior in Race is not always necessary and some backup of the traction control system is often desirable. That last is missing when driving in R mode. Traction control is present in the other positions of the DNA button, the most in A mode and the least in D mode. However, the valves will only open at higher engine loads and revolutions. This often happens at a time when you actually do not expect it, which causes you a certain amount of shock/unrest. Outside the car it also sounds strange when the valves open and close again a moment later. Not so tough ….

The ESC dongle puts an end to this inconvenience. In this case, ESC does not stand for Electronic Stability Control, but for Exhaust Sound Control. With the ESC dongle the outlet valves can be opened under all circumstances. So also in the A, N and D position. However, the original control strategy runs parallel. So either the dongle opens the exhaust valves or the car does it itself. The dongle cannot force the outlet valves to stay closed.

How does it work?

The ESC dongle is plugged into the EOBD plug next to the steering column under the dashboard. The green LED on the ESC dongle comes on and then needs about 4 seconds to start up.

The outlet valves are opened by pressing the button on the gearselector for about 2 seconds. On the clock panel, in the speedometer, the ESC light flashes for 3 seconds to indicate that the system is active. The red LED on the dongle comes on.
Closing the valves is done in the same way; press the button on the gearselector for 2 seconds. On the dashboard, ESC OFF lights up continuously for 3 seconds and the red LED goes out.

When the ESC dongle stays in the EOBD port, it remembers the last set position of the outlet valves.
The dongle is designed to be able to sit semi permanently. About 1 minute after the ignition is switched off, it goes into sleep mode to minimize power consumption to 24 mA. This allows the dongle to remain connected for several weeks without any problems.
When a SGW firewall is present, the dongle does not work. In that case our SGW bridge can be mounted.

Much easier Exhaust controller. Plug in and done.

*No wiring
*NO drilling holes
*No need for sprinkler plastic parts from HD, a True and simple solution.
*No paying a mechanic to install Exhaust Valve Controller
*NO REMOTE!!!!

Couple of questions the dongle looks quite long and based on obd port does it stick out and at risk of being knocked with your knees etc? Second one is how do I know if I have a SGW firewall? Very cool though well done!

Sounds like it remembers it’s state. No doubt most people would prefer this. However I’m in the opposite camp. If I cold start the Quad with the flaps open I’m gonna piss off my neighbors, and more importantly my wife. Our garage is directly under the master bed room.

I love the simplicity of this product though. Is there any way it can be set to always default to “off” on shutdown like the B4A forza?

Tap it closed before shutting down.

hi
I see one on your site for 340 but it says t's for a 2016 QV, am I seeing the correct one and the price has increased or am I not finding the proper one?

When I get more in I can. I have a dongle though that is the same size.

It does not get in the way at all. Now if your clumsy you might hit but otherwise it's tucked up well, otherwise get an extension.
I cannot hit it getting in. Sure you may want to be careful but is really out of the way. Pictures are difficult to really show but these are the best I can do. Excuse my toes.

Otherwise Grab one of these and tuck it up behind or put some velcro on it and stick it to the highest part of the carpet on the side where the hood lever is. Or any OBII extension. Easy solution regardless.

Good idea.. if you could get race mode enabked but selectively turn back on some ofmthe nannies.. that would be great. Seems like someone could make a Bluetooth enabled solution to do all of this. there are only so many buttons in the interior that can be used to trigger things, so a phone app isn’t out of the question for more advanced things.

2 Questions
1) Does it function differently based on D/N/A setting such that I open the flaps in D, but want normal logic controls for N and A?
2) I have a 2018 QV - I would need the SGW Bypass. Could I use the extension cable with the SGW Bypass?

I have the Forza controller but due to necessary modification I never installed it. This sounds like a much better approach... Or the idea being able to turn on and off the nannies in Race would be nice.

An update, they are sending me a replacement due a defective unit.

Those that have this device, when you remote start your car do your valves remain open or do they close after 10-15 seconds?

I'll update again, but so far not happy with this mod 😔

You will be with the replacement. In 20+ years of offering ST, I have had zero issues or returns for faulty items. This is the first. It happens. We will test the unit when it gets back and diagnose what happened. I will send out a replacement unit asap.

I just ordered this dongle to be shipped to Toronto, Canada.
It is stated that the dongle is designed to sit semi permanent allowing the dongle to be connected for several weeks without any problems. Does this mean I will have to remove it and reinstall periodically?

Bought one last night. Will let you know how it goes and stuff when it comes in! Thanks.

Also not sure why but you shipped it in my girlfriends little sisters name lol. Honest to god not even sure how it go on the form. I must have used auto fill or something. Its fine though as she lives with us so its coming to the right place. Just thought it was funny.
