Anyone try a bottle style resonator?

It seems the posts here about resonators are either to delete or replace with an x-pipe.

and while I think I want the straight pipe, a part of me feels like I’lleventually fall into the category of people who eventually go to an x pipe. But I really like the way it pops on the upshift now and would prefer how often and more pronounced it pops with straight pipes. What I don’t think I would like long term, is how loud it is… and how some have described the loudness to not be linear with throttle input. I want loudness to be inbetween straight pipe and x-pipe

soooo… this lead me down the path of replacing the factory resonator with a “performance” one. Keeping the straight through style and still separated (and of course the stock rear muffler), anyone have any thoughts on what I could expect?

an example for reference:Straight through resonator

X pipe does not suit the Quadrifoglio twin bank. I went to X pipe and while it is louder, the flow is smoothed out and results in less braps/burbles on up an down shifts. The factory resonator is kind of straight through, but due to the perforations there is very slight mixing however there are baffles in the way to minimise this.

If you see the attached marked up picture, it is shows the internals. The outer metal casing which is tacked to the outer end covers is what essentially holds the pipes together. So if you grind those welds off and remove the outer casing, the whole thing will just come apart! You can see how this is just a straight through design with some sound dampening to remove resonance via the perforated parts. A bottle resonator does the same sort of thing, it will have a perforted pipe and some sound insulation outside it.

The Blue arrows show how the 2 pipes are just push fitted to the mating ends.
The Yellow circles show where there is sound insulation/ rock wool.
The Orange circle is one of the baffles.

I am planning to put original exhaust back on or install straight pipes with bottle resonators like you are considering. The easiest and most effective option would be to partially grind off the outer casing welds to allow just enough casing to be peeled open, remove the sound insulation and tack it back up together closed. This will result in an OEM look but will be lounder like standalone straight pipes, the perforations will help with resonance removal.

If you choose bottle resonators, I might put those vibrant ones on or these beautiful ones:

I agree with the X pipe comment. I think it does not suit the car. Hence why I have made the Double H pipe.

I will have more sound clips later. This one sounds far superior to the x-pipe I offered from TFL (no longer offering) for example. Although it sounds good it does not sound like it should.
We designed the above Double H about 2+ years ago. It sounds proper. Valves closed it is not too loud but just a bit louder than stock. Open valves and it sings. Lots of nice sound with cracks and braps out the back. Nice idle sound.

I am all about sound but good sound. This is it. Works well with Stock rear although we are coming out with a rear section to match.

Valves open and revving to redline we got a 103.5 dB. Under load the sound with valves open sounds so good. I will have a driveby video up soon.

Thanks for the explanation. I def think I’m not going to do x-pipe. Interesting how they place the perforations staggered. It looks like it allows one side to go to the other.

the resonator you posted looks sexy.

I’m hoping the pop/brap stays the same or increases along with a nice increase in sound, without it being all the way loud like straight pipes

The reason for the perforations staggered in separated Chambers is to prevent mixing so in that sense its a straight pipe from each bank. The GTAm has H pipes like the Fiammenghi exhaust Alfissimo posted.

Makes sense.

well if you do go with the bottle style resonators, please share your findings. I’m certainly considering it.

that double H looks great Alfissimo, however I’m actually a stelvio owner, hopefully you’re able to makeit work for that as well. I just post here because I feel there’s more info here when it comes to these types of topics

@ummagawd Very interesting post and explanation by @Triumph23 . This was exactly my theoretical thought process for few months now. I was not wanting any crossover to maximize the upshift pops and farts character while I was also not sure about straight pipe resonator delete because of raspiness. I personally came up with the idea of bottle resonator which at the time I hadn't heard or seen anyone do. Some people I discussed with said there's no point because that'll be the same as stock resonator. Glad to see at least 2 people with the same thought process here as me and now I'm wondering have either of you actually got it done and have some sound clips? I just want to get it right the first time I visit my exhaust shop lol.
