What is a Giulia "QV"

762 Views 29 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  AlfaAndy
I see people on the forum reference a Giulia "QV". I know there's a Quadrifoglio, but that means "four leaf" and I would expect it to be abbreviated QF. I know other cars are "Quattrovalvole", meaning four valve, and are abbreviated QV sometimes, but I think all the Giulia engines are four valve, so I don't know what that would specify.

Apologies if this has been asked before. I looked but couldn't find it.

In the 1970s Quadrifoglio Verde ('green four-leaf clover') became the trim level for each model's sportiest variant, equipped with the most powerful engine. It is often abbreviated QV. The Alfasud, Sprint, 33, 75, Spider, 164 and 145 all had Quadrifoglio Verde versions.

Also in the 1970s and through the 1980s golden four-leaf clover badges were used to denote the most luxurious and well-equipped variants of Alfa Romeo cars, named Quadrifoglio Oro ('gold four-leaf clover'). The Alfasud, Alfetta, Alfa 6, 90 and 33 had Quadrifoglio Oro versions.

Sometimes when u can't get a QV...you go with a QF ;) Either is fine, search this forum and you'll get a sizeable set of results either way!

QV = Quadrifoglio Verde , (Italian meaning Green FourLeafClover) This was the original name, but when the car came along they decided the name was too long, so they just kept the Quadrifoglio part. I read this somewhere a long time ago, so it must be true.
Call it what you want and prefer, it's the crazier version of the Giulia models.

It means Alfa being stupid and not using QV as it did in the past... And decided to use Quadrifoglio, which also does not sound as good as QV, it also sparked a plethora of jokes and wrong pronounciations in almost every review.

Giulia QV is a misnomer. It is a Giulia Quadrifoglio. Some shorten it to Giulia Quad. I would like to see any Alfa Romeo factory brochure or advertising that uses QV. Anyone?

In the early years all the webpages specific to the Quad on the Alfa USA site contained “QV” as part of the URL.

It is still all over the back end of the current website. If I'm not mistaken, QV is primarily used internally by Alfa Romeo. That could be part of why the enthusiast community has taken to it so much. That and at least some of us can't spell Quadrifoglio without looking it up.

The point is that this norm was abandoned when launching the Giulia Quadrifoglio, as part of the re-positioning the Quadrifoglio, moving it closer to become a "special division" within Alfa Romeo, a bit like the M-division at BMW. Many continued to use the old QV abbreviation, although it's formally incorrect as of 24 June 2015...

Personally, I really like the "Quad" abbreviation you have in NA!

It isn't used within the company as such, but it's much easier to pronounce and spell for all non-Italians out there. it also makes it easier to refer to all the previous versions that were using "QV".
QV means “remember when we made the first sport sedan? Yeah, we’re back…”

Quad is not an official abbreviation, it's just a truncation of the full word.

QV, Q, Quadrifoglio, they all mean the same thing... Four-leaf. So, it's not a big deal to use any of them.

"QF" doesn't make sense, since Quadrifoglio is one word.
