It is how UK car registrations work [AY67LVR] is the reg plate, take the 67 - 50 = 17 meaning the car was registered in the latter part of 2017 or early 2018.

Confusing right!

Did it used to be letters that tied to the registration year? I could swear it was that way when I lived there in the early 90’s. Am I misremembering?

Not Misremembering, changed in 2001 to a different format.
