The other day I was driving in Dynamic mode for some "spirited driving". At one point I did a hard acceleration, then kind of eased off. Came to a stoplight. Engine turned off as expected, then as I let go of the brake, the starter motor continuously tried to turn the car on for a good 10 seconds. I was stuck at the light, ended up having to put the car in Park, turn it off fully and then start it. It was a one off time that this happened but I was quite scared that I would be stranded there at the light haha.

Has this happened to anyone else?

4 days after having my car, it stalled on me while i was driving in slow speed. Took it back to dealer, it turned out they never upgraded the software. They had to do few updates, plus update on turbo and transmission software.
My start/stop is very moody. sometimes does it, sometimes it doesn't.

Hi Giulia412,

Sorry to hear about this! If you decide to visit your local dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to offer assistance if needed. Just send us a PM with your VIN and let me know.

Anecdotal, but the only time I had the stop/start fail was when I was also in D. Perhaps it's related.

Another great dealer forgot to upgrade the software.

Well some go by the "ain't broke don't fix it" plan. Lazy, especially if they prep the car in any way for delivery. What else is there?

I'm beginning to think the start stop feature was barely made usable just for emissions standards and certification. I don't think it was engineered to really be used consistently. I'd like to try it in rush hour morning traffic on I93, but I am afraid it wouldn't work when most needed. I'll just shut it off if it balks on me. OBD2 reset and off I go. Still need to charge up the tablet before delivery.

It's somewhat irritating that I can't just have the feature permanently off rather than having to press the button every time I start the car.

I’m gonna call BS on this thread. Have not experienced any start/stop issues or failure to start issues over my 11k of ownership...but then again, I’ve had all my software updates done on schedule.

Alright, call BS. Are you also going to call BS on the three times my car had to be towed, due to it stalling while I was driving and then not re starting? They did the software update the first time it had to be towed. Turns out, it was the fuel pump that needed to be replaced, therefore the software update didn’t do anything.

Good for you for not having any problems in your 11k of ownership. Doesn’t mean some of us aren’t having issues. Mine is going back to the dealership tomorrow, for the fourth time; the car has 5k. First time it was towed to the shop? Exactly 1000 miles. Then 400 miles later, back it went, again having to be towed, because it wouldn’t start. (It also shut down while the dealership was driving it and wouldn’t ya know it, they also had to have it towed because they couldn’t get it to start either) Then the third time, it had 2700 miles. Luckily, I was able to drive it in that time and will tomorrow as well.

What's your point? My car is at 9,500 miles and I routinely have start/stop issues, I've had all the updates too. It's so problematic that I don't even bother attempting to use it anymore. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it's not a real issue.

I'm happy you have never had any issues.

In the last few weeks, I'm no longer required to press the start/stop button to disable this feature. Don't know what happen or how, but it no longer works. The yellow warning light is not displayed either.

I now have the start/stop and service engine(first time), about 12k miles on car, it does happen.

I just got the start/stop fail, service engine, and CEL for the first time yesterday with the P2172 Throttle Actuator Control System Sudden High Airflow Detected code at 7600 miles. Not a big deal, my car was built in March and has not received a single update yet, and won't until the 10k oil change/service (unless this becomes a recurring problem) ... I live far from the dealer, car has been perfect ... cleared the code and back to normal, moved on

Same issue - dealer has not resolved it

This has happened to my 2017 Giulia TI 4 times after the car has been driven for a while and it is hot.
Once while stopped at a light. First the start/stop and check engine lights will come on, then the car will shut off and will not restart. I have to completely shut off the car, wait 10 to 15 minutes and then the car will start normally . The lights will stay on for a few hours and then they will go off on their own . I have taken the car to the dealer 2 weeks ago , they kept the car 3 days and told me the car needed a software update. I took the car for a 2 long drives this past week and like clock work the car did it again - so dealer did not fix the issue and I will need to take it back in again.

Odd issue and only happens when hot so I know when to expect it and will pull over for 15 min after which the car drives just fine - it is just a matter of finding the right Alfa dealer to fix it - the one I go to is a Chrysler dealership and no dedicated Alfa Romeo service department and it shows.

Disable autostart. I've driven mine disabled for 1.5K miles, no issues. It's worth it. You only get a 'auto start disabled' message for about 20 seconds at start, and the amber "A" at the bottom of the display.

Well worth it. Search how to disable. You don't need that nanny.
