I noticed that both my rear defroster and heated mirrors had stopped working. The dealer repaired things but it turned out that it required a battery charging an then a reset of the ECU module. That's it. No new parts. Apparently something cause the ECU to interrupt power to a module through which power to both the heating for mirrors and the rear defroster work. Weird but also irritating because they could not tell me what could be doe to prevent this happening again. Anyone else had this happen?ANy ideas from those on the "inside".

Usually needs a battery, they need to check battery state of charge, it must be above 65% for all functions to work properly.

yep, same here. i reported the issue a few months back and when the dealer tried it it worked so no fix. This morning had the issue again (as well as a failed headlight) so I took it to dealer and didnt turn the car off so that they could see it. Just called them to find out status. they told me same thing - battery / ecu and yes it's very frustrating cause it works like 1 out of 10 times. hopefully this reset would fix it forever but something tells me it won't.

engine auto-off has only worked for 1 day in my car but i am really happy about it. i kinda hate the feature. hooray for poor craftsmanship (in this case)
Well, I wouldn't be too excited about that as it is likely the result of another issue, like the Battery. But it could just be the hood latch/switch.

Rear defroster and start/stop haven’t worked for most of this year. Dealer resets not working. Battery is apparently not holding anywhere near a full charge, which is nuts for a car with 11k miles. Is there a battery warranty?

my defroster only works on high temp? It won’t let me turn the temp down. Just shuts off and goes back to vent modes. Anyone else notice this?
That's how it should work. If you select defrost mode, it will try to defrost/demist the windows in the quickest, fully automatic mode. After some time it will default back to "normal" auto mode....

<snip>
Rapid window demisting/defrosting (MAX-DEF function)
Press the button to activate (LED on
button on) the windscreen and side
window demisting/defrosting function.
The climate control system carries out
the following operations:
switches on the air conditioning
compressor when environmental
conditions are suitable;
sets air recirculation off;
sets maximum air temperature (HI) in
both areas;
sets fan speed according to the engine
coolant temperature;
directs air flow to windscreen and
front side windows vents;
sets heated rear window on.
displays the fan speed (LED on the
Connect system display lit) and the used
distribution.
IMPORTANT The MAX-DEF function
remains on for about 3 minutes from
when the engine coolant reaches the
appropriate temperature.

When the function is activated, the LED
on the AUTObutton switches off. With
the function activated the only possible
manual adjustments are adjusting the fan
speed and turning the heated rear
window off.

When the A/C or AUTObuttons are
pressed, the climate control system will
deactivate the MAX-DEF function.

I havent used it yet this season but I recall that you can turn the fan down for the front defrost. I can barely hear myself think when that thing is blowing full tilt.

Yes, that's what the manual says ;)
That's the only thing you change though, without disabling the defrost mode.

My battery died after a few months and was replaced for free. If I remember correctly, it took 12 days to get a replacement.

I really don’t think it should only work on high temperature and not be adjustable? If I want a 70 degree defroster that’s not possible. It’s either high temp or nothing. If I turn the temp gauge down it shuts off to vent mode. In the summer if it’s humid I would not run a defroster on high temp so not sure why it does that. I never had a any car or truck not let you adjust the temperature on a defrost. I’m asking if it’s just my car or if anyone has the same issue. Turn on defrost, boom on high. Adjust temp. Boom reverts back to vent. I had same issue with my TI last year also. Maybe I’m missing something but I’ve tried numerous times to figure it out.

However, it does ;)
That's the most efficient setting for fast demisting

if you don't want that, just leave it on "normal" auto, set the vents to windscreen, and adjust parameters to your hearts delight :)

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I guess I never had a car or truck before that didn’t allow me to adjust the defrost temp. Very annoying driving in summer wit full blast 85 degree defrost on. Even in winter that would get too hot eventually. I guess I live wit it like all the other Alfa issues I live wit everyday. I’m starting to realize what it actually means to own an Alfa. In the beginning I thought it was stereotypical banter from other car owners. Now I realize they may have understated it lol

Hello cremains,

It should however fall back to "normal" auto about 3 minutes after the car reaches operating temp, so you don't have to suffer too long ;)
Quick demist is only a momentary function.....

Even with all of the heat, it cannot unfreeze the windshield wipers when driving in falling snow. Same experience with my other cars, btw so not so much a criticism of Alfa as a complaint about a problem looking for a solution.

The setting is "defrost" not "demist" and it takes a lot of heat to clear frost from glass.

Update: solved! After several trips to the dealer repair shop who blamed this on city driving, they discovered the sender unit on the battery was defective and was reporting a lower charge than the battery actually held. Once the sender was replaced the charge was correctly identifed and all the electronics that weren’t functioning (rear defroster, mirror defrosters, engine start/stop) we’re up and running.
