The tracking devices that plug into the OBD port only have power and ground Pins (at least the old ones did), its a way for it to be connected to the car, powered up, and out of the way. So no its not reading your computer. Having worked for an insurance company for many years there is such a thing as too much data, it just muddies the pool. And lets be honest, they really just want to see if you're driving fast, stopping short, and probably if you spend more time in a location different than the one you're rated for.

My state farm agent walked outside, saw my QV and said "I'm not even going to ask if you want the driver tracker". We both laughed. I'm also paying almost $100/mo less with them than Allstate wanted. It pays to shop around especially when your rates go up.

Times have changed. Have you noticed the cancel culture mentality? Never under-estimate control freaks.

A 3 second gap lol. That's just an invitation for the California push-cut-and shove, especially if they're in a pickup truck.

I’m with progressive and they told me to put the snapshot in the car as well. I told them no because the car manual says not to plug any of those tracker things in I told them I’m not going to go against Alfa or their recommendation for warranty. I had snapshot on my dart and got dinged Daily. I got a %18 discount. Then got to remove it. And within no time the rates just keep going up a few dollars till it was right back to normal. I know their snapshot won’t hurt anything but I refuse to plug it in anyways. They will always find ways to rip us off and we save nothing

I think your phone is collecting more data about your trip than your car tracker is. Unless you are opting out of every option in your application I’m sure your speed, location etc is all logged on google/apple/waze maps.

I think just by the use of technology, you have to assume nothing is private.

Yes but there is a cost benefit to everything, that data crunching aint free. How much kore money will they get out of you for that info to be worth it? Probably not enough.

Should we assume our insurance company has access to our phone’s data?

If you are using their app..yeah, I probably would. I remember reading an article about the purchasing of data through different companies - funnily enough, I drove to Nordstrom Rack the other day and google maps tracked it. Today, I’m getting Nordstrom rack adds on the side of the forums.

Personally, I’m indifferent to data collecting but mainly because gathering statistical data is a double edged sword..we can learn more about accidents, traffic reports, buying habits etc but it can be pushed against us as well. 🤷‍♂️

I was waiting for this response: 'because your phone collects data, you shouldn't worry about anything else', but there's a significant difference here. I'm not required by law to have a cell phone. I can drive around with or without a cell phone. Vehicle insurance is another matter. If they require you to plug a device into your car or you can't get insurance, that's a huge problem. History teaches us to never assume benevolence when it comes to those in power.

Oh, haven't you heard? If there isn't enough money for the control freaks, they just get their bought and paid for politicians to take our money and give it to them anyways! The desire for the data and the amount of control it gives them will over-ride any cost concerns.

Look at the cancel culture mindset in operation right now at the highest levels. A complete scoring of you in everything you think, say and do. This is already being done in China, so it's not far off. It's all about tracking, identifying, controlling, "retraining", etc.; the stock and trade of all socialist regimes. Obey or suffer the consequences. Thinking of resisting or having an opinion other than the one they give you? You are now an enemy of the state. This happened in Nazi Germany, in the Soviet Union, in communist Cuba, and it's happening in communist China; all socialist regimes.

As the power of computers, the increase of storage capacity, and the speed of the internet increase, so does the potential for micro-managing, and that's what the control-freaks want more than life itself. Never underestimate these people, for by the time you realize what they're doing, they've already gotten themselves into position to "manage" you.

We are taking about insurance here. Please try not to add your personal take on politics and misunderstanding of socialism. I'm so tired of the "cancel culture I'm a victim for being ignorant" trope.

By the way, the Nazis killed all the socialist and only kept the party name (see Night of the Long Knives or Nacht der langen Messer.)

Yeah, but insurance is a SOCIALIST concept. Why should the collective come together to lower the cost of your idiot driving?

See, it's on topic... ;)
Fair enough. So are roads and the police that ticket me and drive up my insurance rates. I want every road to be a toll road and I only want cops to ticket me if I pay them to.

I worked for them for years, I ran their financial systems, I built predictive models for them, and ran the simulations they use based on the data they can get. There are plenty of cost concerns. You can believe whatever you'd like but that is the truth.

Of course, I got dinged for that. The car didn't even downshift, or redline.
I threw the State Farm tracker out the window. So much for that!

We all like saving money. So, who has found good rates without a tracker?
Progressive for me had the best rates. They do offer a tracker but it's optional.
I would never use that crap. Vote with your money! Don't buy insurances that force you to be tracked.
