Last week I rang Zagame in Melbourne and asked about the lead time on a Giulia Veloce, and also whether 2018-built cars are now available.

The answer was discouraging - he said that FCA Australia have so many 2017 cars available that they are not currently importing 2018 builds. I thanked him and said I'd check back in a couple of months.

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of this?

Could well be possible. On Carsales you can see a bunch of '2018' cars though, but also heaps of 17s. The build dates are clearly printed on a sticker on the passenger side B pillar (lower part). If in doubt, drop in the showroom and have a look at the stock, and check the stickers. Bear in mind though - that a 2018 year build for Aus could differ spec wise from a 2018 US spec.

Less likely that the build will be different from UK spec, surely. I can't see them setting up a unique RHD production line for Australia.

Yeah agreed if compared to the UK RHD spec. Not sure if this is the same in the UK, but when the Veloce's were brought into Australia (in 2017 anyway), there was limited customisation that you could do (hardware or software wise, in comparison to the other EU marques) - colour, sunroof, and something else I can't quite remember - everything else was stock take it or leave it. Which is not a bad thing, because having limited options makes it more likely that a selection will be in the yard. So whilst certain 2018 options could be available in a RHD car in other regions, FCA Australia could still possibly limit it, just saying. I don't know enough about the differences in a 2018 build vs 2017, but the one thing missing I would have liked to have was Apple carplay. Good luck in your search!

Well the Carplay/Android Auto is one thing, plus the general desire to have some of the initial bugs ironed out.

Aussie base Giulias are built to an unofficial Aussie spec - they are jam packed full of options (as standard) that are not even present in some 280hp Ti US or Veloce UK base spec - paddle shifts for instance are standard across the whole range in Aus spec cars, you cannot get an Aus Giulia without paddle shifts - 8.8 inch infotainment and larger instrument cluster is another standard feature

all specs are listed here

https://www.alfaromeo.com.au/conten...lfaromeo/en_au/pdf/Giulia_Buyers_Guide_v5.pdf

there isnt an unusual amount of cars on the demo lots, about normal, but the advertised for sale cars used to number over 300 - that figure is down to less than 200

2017 cars will be harder to move without Android Apple Carplay, but as i understand it they can be modified if need be

because of logistics it was decided to not offer that many options but to include most of the sought after ones as standard for us living in the lucky country - taking the importing duties off ATECO was another positive plus

i would take anything a car salesman says with a pinch of salt - (then add lemon and tequila)

I only see 14 Veloces Australia wide as demos

the current offer on a base is pretty generous though

https://www.alfaromeo.com.au/giulia.html

5 year warranty and roadside
3 years free service

plus a $4000 Veloce Sports Pack

for less than $60k drive away - brochure does not mention you get the adaptive dampers but you do

Veloces are a different kettle though, they are holding their price

I got mine last week from Zagame and from what I could gather they are not going to be seeing 2018 with Apple Car play until at least September. I don't think that have tons of stock, but no one really knows exact figures.

Yes, our cars are fully loaded with all the goodies, which is great.

Also, agree that the current offer was enough to tip me over the edge in some respects. The 5 years free roadside and warranty and 3 years servicing actually firstly puts the mind at rest for any potential gremlins in the new cars and the servicing will save my at least $4500 in total as my older BMW was killing me in servicing!

True. Australian Giulia production has been significantly scaled back because of inventory. Monthly production has consistently been in the single digits ever since last November.

Standard equipment (and option availability) change in every market, depending on what the country office deems necessary. That is also true between European countries.

All of that, of course, does not require a different production line. Giulias and Stelvios, with all kinds of engines, trims and option combinations, both LHD and RHD, for all worldwide markets, come out of the exact same line.

That was true back in the ATECO days as well - when I bought my 159 in 2008 they were importing cars with more "extras" as "standard". Makes sense in a smaller market where you are pitching the car at a fairly narrow segment, which I guess you would call "junior exec where good value is needed to counterbalance the tendency to default to German". So my 2.4 came with 18" wheels, electric seats and metallic paint, all of which were extras in the UK.

First of all, welcome to the forum - are you Stewart from UK Alfa site? glad you made it across
:)

I had a 2011 series III 159 2.4 Ti - yes they were nicely specced, i remember our RHD Ti had one or two slight cosmetic differences to the South African RHD Ti - the seats something, cant remember

a good time to be in the market if you are patient to see what Sept Oct brings if Android is a need

Yes, that's me :)

I remember being a bit disappointed because the car I bought in June '08 was a December '07 build and in September '08 they re-worked the front end and shed quite a bit of weight. All to do with the original design being over-engineered to accommodate a GM V8 that never eventuated. But back then I didn't have a choice on the timing because the lease on my previous car was expiring.

This time I'm happy to be patient. The 159 is still running sweetly (200k+) and I will be out of the country for most of Sept/Oct anyway.

ah, yes the Series II, and all the weight reduction - there was a very small pressure release valve that was made of alloy on the Series I that they changed to a plastic version, talking about the weight of a 20 cent piece, anyway, needless to say the plastic melted and a few blew till they updated back to the alloy ones - yes, electric seats was another casualty of the weight reductions - you must have been lucky to get that version - everything was restored in the Series III eventually - we never got a 159 GTA either although it was talked about

the GM block was what went into the 3.2 V6 - or was that something else youre talking about?

that 5 cylinder diesel in the 2.4 runs like a sewing machine though, its a relentless engine block if you look after it

Hi there. Welcome on over. Must say I’m not surprised by the inventory statement, they’re not exactly common on the road, as great a car as they are.

Apart from the ACP, I don’t know that there is a great deal of difference though. It would be nice, as the onboard nav is shyte, but google maps is more than fine for the most part IMHO. If you’re looking at extras, the Remus exhaust from Zagame is bloody nice, and ditch the factory air filter for a BMC. Breathes and sounds v nice. Juz will back me up there.

Anyway, good luck and hope you get a good deal. You’ll love the car.

Is the Remus exhaust worth looking at? Do you have any info on gains and cost of the system?

Also so curious on the BMC...!

Any info would be great!

From memory the Remus adds about 2-3% extra torque and power along with a BMC filter? Some more knowledgeable members might chirp in here.

The filter. You might want to look at their Bluetooth GOPedal too. Kills throttle lag.

I read somewhere that the original design brief included the requirement to fit a 5 litre GM V8, and even that a prototype was tested. Then the EU tightened its emission rules and that part of the project was shelved, but they had already designed the front end with that in mind.

Edit: here it is https://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_159_history.shtml

Yes it's been great. Made it a perfect long-distance tourer, with the ability to give Commodores and Falcons a big surprise on mountain roads. I just hope I didn't pass them so fast that they couldn't see that they were being passed by a diesel.

Awesome, thanks, was down the rabbit hole last night on all the air filters. The V2 looks very good from EC as well.

Only concern would be the members who've talked about potential issues with the MAF sensors as mentioned here: https://www.giuliaforums.com/forum/594-intake-exhaust/13586-bmc-air-filter.html

Here: https://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gta/326754-will-a-kandamp-n-filter-bugger-my-maf.html

And here: https://www.fordflex.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13066

However, in a large retort, K&N have this: https://www.knfilters.com/blog/kn-reveals-mass-air-flow-sensor-urban-myths

As for the Remus, will be chatting to Zagame today about that bad boy!

Yes a lot of blokes have the EC intake and they rave about it. The BMC is a bit of a cheap interim but well worthwhile. Madness have just released a CFibre proper cold air intake that looks very interesting too.

Speak to Roberto Costanzo at Zag and tell him Sir Richard sent you. He’ll get a laugh out of it. Tell him you want to swap your calipers for another colour too, though he probably wouldn’t laugh about that.
