Let's see all the personalised plates out there. Post a pic and if it's not obvious what it means then add a short description

JISLAIK
A South African expression. Pronounced "Yis-like", it is an expression of astonishment. If someone really likes your car for instance, their comment will often be "Jislaik, that's a cool car"

Yep... and all full of people who pay an annual fee to the government to basically repeat what's already on the trunk lid.
ie. Paying an annual subscription to put "VETTE" on an Corvette, with the rear bumper clearly stating "Corvette" inches above it.

Personalized plates are generally cringe or uncreative.

Annual? That's crazy. Here in Ontario and the rest of Canada as far as I know it's a one time fee.

Varies by state here.

For most states, yes. Some states allow you to pay for registration for two years at once.

You're also in a British colony where, if I understand it, you buy reg plates and they are yours. You can resell and the new owner can register their car with that plate.

For most US states, the plate is linked to the car. You can't sell a personalized plate to someone else and they can use it as their plate. You can keep a plate and resell, but the new owner can't attach it to their car and use it as their registered plate.

Unfortunately we are not able to sell our plates. Only the UK can do that as far as I know.

Official statement:
By law, number plates are Crown property and shall be returned when no longer in use or when requested by the ministry. Number plates cannot be sold privately. Personalized ("own-choice") plates returned to the ministry are terminated and can't be re-issued to a different requestor.
That's brilliant! Wish I had thought of that one
