I usually play music off a USB drive (i've tried this both on the centre console armrest USB (inside), and front centre panel USB). I have the tracks (~1700) on shuffle, in different directories. However I am noticing that the random shuffle isn't random - the algorithm seems to calculate a fixed shuffle and always plays certain songs only, in a particular order too. The infotainment system can definitely see all the tracks and it shows #/1700 tracks when it plays a song.

My current workround is to unplug and plug the USB back in, or turn off shuffle, forward a couple of tracks in sequential alphabetical order, then turn the random shuffle back on. This seems to reset the algorithm to calculate from a different point and the songs then appear more random. Problem is, when I restart the car - it plays the last song.....then goes back to its original 'not-so' random shuffle.

Anyone else have this? And any other more elegant solution/workaround? Cheers! Juz

Haven't noticed it using the USB drive but I know with Spotisfy I get a set shuffle that always leaves out a lot of songs on any of my playlists.

Thanks Tad, when you're using Spotify, do you know if the shuffle get done by the phone, or by the infotainment system?

Not sure if it's Spotify or the car, didn't know there was a limited shuffle with the USB so wasn't looking for it. I'd tell you I'll try and figure it out but in all honesty, I'll probably forget but for some reason I remember, I'll let you know.

I have experienced the same thing and deal with it by hitting the forward seek button on the steering wheel a lot.

Last weekend the system mysteriously "lost" my USB flash drive. Nothing I did restored it. Just came back later.

Thanks Tadslc / Chipshot. Yup i've basically resolved to just set it to sequential alphabetical, forward a few tracks, and then set it back to random shuffle.

I'm taking my car in this week. Have there been any software updates that deal with this issue?
I can imagine trying to explain it to a CDJR service writer and receiving a blank look in return.

Not that I’ve heard. What I’ve started to do is write down the first 5 songs from a few predictable starting tracks. That way when I take it in I can do a magic trick and show the dealer how I can predict the future tracks. Lol! The issue is pretty minor so I’m just living with it for now.

Message sent. My car will be at the dealer tomorrow morning, and I would like this this addressed then.

I've definitely noticed some songs play more than others, but have not identified a pattern. If a song plays again (soon after I have heard it), I guess I just simply ffd to the next song. Not a big deal for me, but understand if it's bothersome for others.

I've noticed the "random list" also. I think it just randomizes the music and plays off the "random" list. Is this not how it's supposed to function? @Chipshot, please let us know what the dealer says.

So in CS there is no such thing as random. I have noticed that it is not that random either and there does seems to be a fixed list that is gets close to almost everytime. I will say that it is much much worse with the iPod because shuffle is turned off when you turn the car off so the list always is reset and you hear the same songs again and again (even though it is the iPod doing the shuffling).

I have about 4000 songs on my USB and, in theory, should only hear the same song once every 8 days or so but its more frequent than that.

Does that calculation assume your music is playing 24/7?

I didn't think my expectations of randomness were excessive. How random, you say? :nerd:

Haha, yeah 24/7. Meaning that is the soonest I should hear the same song - I'm sure I hear the same song at least once a week but I also skip a lot and sometimes play a single artist so I'm resetting the randomized list a lot.

The dealer's service writer gave me a blank stare when I explained the situation. Perhaps an open AlfaRomeoCares case will help him understand.

My randomized list seems to be set in stone.

So you always hear the same song following a song?
Yes, and my right thumb is getting a bit sore. I wish there was a safe way to document them while driving. I've been thinking of creating playlists, but that would be abandoning the random chance of listening to seldom-heard songs and oddball segues.

Hmmm, I'll pay closer attention. I'm sure mine is more random than that....but I'll "look".

Yep, "not very random" when playing from a flash drive in my car also.

Shuffle by definition is supposed to take all items in a list and reorder them--no duplicates and a presumption of randomness.

The finite bit width arithmetic that computers use does not provide a means to produce random values. Computer Science however does allow reading the result of a truly random process such as checking the voltage across a diode while a forward current is run through it; however there is no real need for that in your car since approximately random arithmetic is good enough for the purpose of generating a play list. The problem with the Giulia infotainment system is that it is either not "approximately random" or "not shuffled" or both.

One common problem in CS is the assumption that pseudo random bit sequence generators actually generate pseudo random bit sequences when in fact they generate highly predictable and repeating bit sequences. I wonder if that is what Giulia's system is using.
