Brought my Gulila Sport AWD TI in to fix a few issues. I was actually very pleased by in large with the experience as they had a loaner gulilia waiting for me, and got everything done in one day instead of 2. Even got the infotainment update even though my car was not on the infotainment update list. It did solve a lot of my problems.

The one thing they didn't fix is the horrible smell several people have mentioned on the forum for AWD's. They said they couldn't duplicate the problem and were not aware of any documented issues of other people having this issue. It happens every single time I don't turn off the auto stop and it happens fairly quickly.

I know bad odor is very subjective, however I am pretty sure most people would be able to smell this! Short of driving around by the dealer and then dropping in, is anyone aware of any TSB's or RRT's that address this?

That is a recognized problem. There is even an RRT dedicated to it. My car had it too, and my dealer was waiting for the parts to come in to fix it.
It is very aggravating when these service departments treat us like we are idiots and pretend not to know about well known issues. RRT 17-080 "Odor coming from engine compartment" was designed to address this issue.
Here's a link to the thread where this was discussed, including a detailed diagram from MacGeek showing how they fix it.

RRT 17-080 wasn't on the list provided to me by AlfaRomeoCares. I wonder if my car was produced after a solution was adopted at the factory.

Hi Chipshot,

You have a number of RRTs on your vehicle that your dealership will be able to perform:

1) 17-081 2017 GA BROKEN GLOVE BOX DOOR HANDLE
2) 17-065 2017 GA AUDIO SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED
3) 17-061 2017 GA FLASH: AMPLIFIER AUDIO ENHANCEMENT
4) 17-060 2017 GA ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL FLASH
5) 17-058 2017 GA HVAC DIAGNOSTIC/SYSTEM FLASH
6) 17-057 2017 GA TRANSMISSION SHIFT AND DRIVEABILITY FLASH
7) 17-043 2017 GA POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC/SYSTEM FLASH

Your dealership will also be able to check for any TSBs related to any concerns you are experiencing. If you have any additional questions please let me know!

It wasn't on my list either that Andrea gave me. My car was a March Build. I do know it still smells! I am going to get it sufficiently pungent and drop by so they can "experience" it!

We didn't have this issue, but three weeks ago I got a call from Alfa USA to take the car in for some updates. I thought they were talking about more flash updates, and was surprised because I had done a number of updates just a few weeks before. Took the car in a day later, and they replaced the engine bay seal and the seal around the glove box. So the dealer had the parts on hand, got it done same-day, and gave me a nice TI as a loaner.

What a shame that you have to suffer (hopefully no permanent harm) to prove the problem exists.

Presumably this "horrible smell" is engine fumes/chemical smells and not mold, dead animal, skunk spray or some such.

Mechanics spend all day with their head under the hood of a car. It would not be surprising if they could no longer smell engine fumes.

Check and see if the RRT has been done (some holes in the underside of the hood should be taped over, MacGeek provided a picture in the original thread on the subject) and if not insist that it be done. If you are smelling skunk spray, first make certain there is not a dead skunk (or piece thereof) under your car and if not call an exterminator.

I would describe the smell in my car as "soapy". Not quite the "cheap disinfectant" smell my father would note when checking into a hotel and not altogether unpleasant, but certainly noticeable and different from any other car I've owned or leased.

I don't have the engine compartment smell that others are reporting, but I do notice an usual smell in the trunk when I open it. Like a chemical odor, but I do not have anything in there. Anyone else notice this?

It is definitely fumes......however that being said my wife picked up the car last night and said the smell still was there. I went to drive it this morning to the dealer to show them (smell) and it was hardly noticeable.

There were several things that never worked that they said worked fine for them and they fixed nothing and almost all of them now work.

It took 3 clicks to open my trunk from the key fob. They said worked fine for them with 2 clicks. Works fine for me now with 2 clicks.
My remote start worked only 2 times the whole time I had the car....they said it worked fine......works fine for me too now
my auto stop would lurch when engaged when I released the brake.....they told me that is the way all auto stops resume....said they did nothing.....auto stop is much smoother now when reengaging

I walked out of the dealership when purchasing it as they couldn't find a car that matched all my specs. They called the next day and said there was one at the port with everything I wanted on it. They scrambled to get it to Texas and it showed up the last day of the month. They seemed pretty anxious to make sure this sale happened in June. The car arrived at 4 pm the last day of the month and they called me when it arrived. I showed up, did a test drive and everything was fine. They probably had it for an hour and a half before I arrived. I'm pretty sure not a single software update was done to my car and I am wondering if that resolved some of those issues as well.

Hi skylar18,

I'm sorry the smell has not been fully addressed. If we can follow up on that, please let me or Andrea know.

While no fumes for me, that soapy/detergent smell is strange. Hopefully nothing harmful.

Engine fume smells vary from vehicle to vehicle and from time to time. Oil and such left in trace amounts on parts that get hot in the engine bay will slowly burn and produce a smell. Blowby will be worse for a new engine than once the engine is broken in. The exhaust from the vehicle in front of you can be actively blown in to your cabin by the systems in the car.

I think the RRT only addresses smells that originated in the engine bay. Perhaps you could open the hood while the engine is running and see if that "new engine smell" is present?

Perhaps something was stained, noticed in PDI and the dealer used a detergent that left the smell in the car?
Is a point of origin for the smell identifiable?

Is this issue unique to your car?

I also live in South Florida. I saw your post regarding a bad chemical smell in your Alfa's trunk from last year. I have my Giulia for about 5 weeks now and am noticing the same thing. It seems to have begun recently. I have 993 miles on the car.

Did you ever find the cause? Did it go away? I haven't reported it as of yet. My dealer is Arrigo in West Palm. Thanks.

My car is one year old (from Rick Case) and the smell seems to have dissipated for the most part. Not sure when it happened, I don't use the trunk that often.
