Automotive parking light Automotive tail & brake light Car Grille Vehicle

When I bought the car used there was a very small spot here where I could see the black of the bumper, it’s progressed to this after adding an additional 30k miles.

I’d assume that this isn’t something that would be covered by warranty and figured a pull/respray would be in the future.

Anyone have suggestions for what to do to slow this down for a while? Slap a chunk of ppf over it? I know it would pull more paint off on removal.

Watch how you wash your car. I have a similar situation on my daily (not either of my Alfas) and a high pressure stream of water aimed right at the paint peel area caused a similar situation to this. It hasn't progressed even washing it with a pressure washer as long as I'm careful. Get it repainted if you wish and be careful going forward. The area where you specifically have it is on an edge, and the clear coat is notoriously thin in those areas.

That looks like it has been hit by something (rock, animal, car, objects in the garage, kids toys, etc) and as noted above once a small area is damaged it can spread.

I had an area on my left rear wheel well rear fascia peel back, undoubtedly started by impacts from road debris. In that much less visible spot, touch up paint is good enough.

According to other forum members, a front fascia respray is around $500 to $1000, depending on the paint type and how good of a color match you want. Keep in mind that from the factory the front fascia color is not a perfect match to the painted metal.

Wait a minute, what PSI your pressure washer is that it can strip a car paint? I never had a car that the paint work would fail using a 1k PSI pressure washer available at most retailers. Currently, I have the portable one with 350 PSI which is enough in most cases to do weekly wash, however, if an AR paint easily peels using 1k P.W. it's a big bummer.

I never said the pressure washer caused anything directly, rather that it expanded the problem. There was already a big chip in the paint on another one of my cars (not Alfa) and like the OP's car, it expanded. In my case, it was during washing if the chip got hit at certain angles with the pressure washer. Something like this would only happen on the edge of panels or where the clear coat is already thin.

My pressure washer has ~1700 PSI but with a different 40 degree tip on the gun I bring it down to about around 1200 PSI to get a better flow rate for my foam cannon. 1000 PSI isn't going to cause any damage, you just have to be careful around paint chips and not aim it directly at them to mitigate something like this happening.

Thanks all, May reach out to a local mobile PDR to see what they can do. Chips on the hood could be taken care of too.

I was already searching for nice Italian flag 🇮🇹 vinyl to cover it up for the moment but not sure that’s really to my taste.

I did not say it was your statement, but this is not the first time I read someone was posting about a pressure washer and paint striping on this forum. A decade ago, when the manufacturers switched to eco-friendly or water-based paint, I never had an incident where the paint around a chip area would get damaged using a pressure washer using up to 1K or a bit above PSI. However, if it's possible that you can strip the AR paint using a $1k+ P.W., it would be the first car I own with a paint job like this. The AR is actually the first car I own that had an overspray in certain areas of the car, such as the roof, the gas lid cover, and the rear door pillar. I used a claybar to remove it.To my surprise, other owners here had reported the same issue in those particular spots. So it is very believable that the paint job on AR is bubbling in certain areas and then can get damaged by just using a regular P.W.

Yeah no washing with a pressure washer here although I do dry with a leaf blower.

I have no doubt that the damage was caused by a rock or similar impact from the highway. If it were a normal chip it wouldn’t bug me, my hood looks like I drove through an asteroid belt at this point. It’s the peeling that’s got me. As though if I don’t do something substantial about it that it’s going to get much worse quickly.
I washed her up and sent some pics to a mobile PDR shop today and got a quote >$1k to repair this and all of the rock chips on the hood…

Think I’ll order a Dr. Color Chip kit and give it a go. Worst case it comes out awful and I’ll go another route.
