Yesterday here in NJ it was raining pretty hard and I noticed the the system was shut off, has anyone else seen this. Is the rain blocking the sensor or is a safety thing?

Those systems have even more difficulty with snow.

Yes those systems do turn off if they are no help because of weather or simply the exterior sensors are dirty. You probably got a warning notice somewhere but didn't see it.

I've seen the messages in other cars. I usually think to myself something along the lines of "sure, I'll pull over at the next convenient location to clean the sensor(s)". Such cleanings need to be repeated frequently in heavier snow (the likes of which one shouldn't be doing much driving in).

Essentially its a limitation with technology due to the front sensor being obstructed. Same thing happens with the Volvos.
