Had front brake squeal start around 2,500 miles has 3,000 on it now. Also had heavy brake dust in front from the Brembo pads, so I ordered Hawk performance ceramic pads and had dealer install today. The brake squeal now is worse than before.

Has anyone had front break squeal on their QV non ccb?

Yes, I have. No solution yet. They have removed and cleaned rotors and pads, opened a dialogue with the Alfa techs. Apparently there is a TSB for this, not sure which one. Still no solution though. Frustrating.

Can you guys confirm whether or not they applied anti squeal paste to the back of the pads? Some pads are directional as well. The shims are offset in the direction of rotation so they wedge against the edge of the caliper and do their work there. If they are put in backwards, there is room to vibrate on the unshimmed edge and can squeal. This would happen on Ferrari 348 pads. Same Brembo pads and rotors as Porsche 911s of the same years. I switched to Posiquiet ceramic pads for low dust and squeal and added paste. Worked great even though they might bite a tiny bit less than the metallic pads. Even on track I think you could adjust braking points to compensate. The reduction is dust was wonderful! Make sure they are bedded properly too.

Have you tried a semi-aggressive bedding in process?

Many high performance brake pads come with instructions similar to this:

1) Do 5 stops from 40 mph down to 5 mph, without coming to a stop
2) Drive 1 mile without using the brakes if possible
3) Do 5 stops from 60 mph down to 5 mph, without coming to a stop
4) Drive home using brakes as little as possible, then let brakes completely cool
5) Brakes are now bedded in

Modern pads don't really have a problem with resins in the compound needing to heat cycle out like old pads used to. What this process is really about is making sure a smooth, even layer of pad material is deposited on the rotors, which alleviates most squeals and vibrations.

I followed the bedding process on the Hawk box that pads came in, similar to what you descibed. Was squealing as soon as I left dealer. After the bedding process starting squealing through entire slowdown and louder at end of stop. I dropped back off at dealer after driving for an hr for them to look at tomorrow.

Was Grease applied to the rear (Back-plate) of the pads?

Generally squeaking in many cases is not from the pad and rotor contact itself but from the vibration of the pad to the caliper. Hawk supplies back-plate grease with all of their pads.

I will have to call dealership in the morning. Service was closed when I dropped car back off. Thank you for your response. I ordered pads from you guys (Euro-Compulsion) and is first chance to get them installed this week. Wanted dealer to install since was such a new car hoping would be no issues. Greensboro dealership is amazing I'm sure they will get resolved.

Make sure the pads are installed correctly in the right direction if needed.

So if you replaced the OEM Pads with NON-OEM and the squeeking not only continued but got worse....ain't the pads...must be a rotor issue??
as far as brake dust, yeah the OEM set-up kicks up quite a bit for sure...more than I am used to...and I have/had Brembo's on my other cars and didn't experience this.....as far as squeeking...very intermittent on mine...usually more pronounced after some hard driving and then cool down normal conditions....

Finally getting new OEM pads replaced under warranty. Hopefully solves the squealing issue. Will update after getting car back and putting miles on them. Fingers crossed at this point.

My dealer is also replacing the rear rotors and pads to address the squeak. Apparently this is the Alfa preferred solution for this issue. We'll see...:nerd:

Let me know how this pans out guys. I have started to notice the squealing more after 2500 miles and it is getting a bit tiresome. When I mentioned it at the dealership they gave me the old "it's a performance braking system so there will be some squeaking". I should have told them that my 911TT doesn't squeal. I wonder how they would have responded to that! Aye, aye, aye........

Well picked up the car today at dealer after replacing pads and 15 miles into my drive around the squeal is back. Guess it's not the pads has to be the rotors at this point. Original pads squealed, Hawk ceramic pads squealed and now another set of original pads squeal as well. Needless to say quite disappointed so went and parked the car and jumped in my daily driver a new civic and no squeal what a surprise. Will be contacting dealer again tomorrow and Alfa care to get a better solution. Will update with next details soon.

Wow Scuba.....that's a lot of effort to rid of a squeak! I commend you since I've basically just lived with it at this point - and my dealer is only 4 miles away.

Oh I hope I don't have this to look forward too. On a side note...My dad has an e-type that had a bad squeak on the drivers side front brake. I almost took the front brakes apart before deciding to just try sandpaper on the edge of the rotor as I noticed the squeak was only every half rotation. Sure enough, sanded the lip/edge of the rotor and squeak was gone.

Might be as simple as contaminant on the surface or lip that causes it to resonate when the pad comes in contact with it.

Fortunately my dealer is about the same distance. Wish they had changed the rotors as well. Looks like others have had both pads and rotors replaced but Alfa only authorized pads to this point. Hopefully will replace rotors to solve the issue. Thankfully is not my daily driver.

Scuba,

Just wanted to say that your car looks amazing with that coating. I'd love to see it one day in person. Do you ever find yourself in Raleigh?

Latest update. Alfa authorized new front rotors today. Thanks to Alfa of the Triad and Sandy for the quick action to get resolved. Will update after new rotors are installed next week.
