Just wanted to warn people of Exploding Sunroofs. I was driving on the interstate and luckily the fabric was close between me and my closed sunroof. There was a loud exploding sound and when I looked up there was a huge hole on my sunroof. The glass damaged the paint on the entire back half of the car. My car had 880 miles on it and it took a battle to get Alpha Romeo to admit it was a defect. Here is a link to consumer reports that discusses the issue. I believe the Giulia Ti needs to be added to the list. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/exploding-sunroofs-danger-overhead/

Large sunroof...small impact...recipe for a later failure. Seems to me likely that this issue is similar to the Corningwear issue. They changed glass formulas in the early 90's to a "stronger" glass, that it turns out is more likely to fail if there is a stress point from being dinged.

I don't know what caused this, but it doesn't surprise me that sooner or later this would happen with that giant sunroof.

A twig that slid between the 228i rear window and the forward lip of the open trunk was enough shatter the entire window when the trunk was close. Same kind of exposed edge...

The rear window of my 1983 Audi 4000E exploded shortly after the first time I used the rear defroster. The car had only a few hundred miles on it at the time. The dealer said "it just happens" and replaced the window. A side window of my 1990 Toyota 4runner exploded while it was parked. Maybe somebody broke it, but the vehicle was still locked and nothing was taken or disturbed. My insurance covered this one as an assumed break-in attempt.

On Giulia with some-or-other package (Ti?) the glass gets upgraded to laminated (maybe not the rear window), which will not break apart if broken. I dunno about the sunroof. Laminated glass is more expensive and heavier than the safety glass that your sunroof apparently had. The purpose of the upgrade on Giulia is to improve sound proofing. Laminated glass on the side windows can be a hazard after an accident, should you need to break the glass to get out of the car; it is extremely difficult to break and I don't think a snap punch will work.

I don't like sunroofs; this just adds another reason to my list.

I never was a big of fan of sun-roofs, or as I call them -- a built in leak. With that being said, my Ti Lusso has a sun roof.

I didn't want it also, but my car had everything else I wanted so I took it.

Had the same thing happen on our 2014Mercedes C250 with about 4000 miles on it. Large sun roof just blew out on the freeway at speed.

Where you guys with the sunfroof open on the highway? I have never thought about this ever happening but now I am worried. When I was 23, I owned the car on the top of the list: A 2005 Scion TC - the first compact vehicle with a glass roof. I never had an issue with it however.

Large majority will never have problems....it seems these large glass panes explode when they are not installed properly, introducing stress points....for example F30 BMw had numerous cases of rear windshield exploding, reason was pane being only slightly misaligned and touching bodywork only so slightly...add some extreme heat and it is enough that glass cant hold...i will not lose any sleep ober this...if my roof hasnt exploded yet it most likely will not later

Hi Profitpig,

I'm so sorry to hear about this! It sounds like you may have already reached out to our Alfa Romeo Premium Care team but if not please send us a PM with your VIN so I can start this process for you.

This problem is not exclusively with Alfa Romeo Giulia models. I recently read an in depth article on the web about ALL newer cars with panorama sunroofs having 'exploding' issues! ALL brands! Including BMW, Audi, Mercedes etc. Apparently these high end cars all seem to (possibly?) be buying the glass for their sunroofs from questionable suppliers. Perhaps China or some other bargain vendor? You can literally just be driving along and these glass roofs explode on you! Its best to keep the sun shades closed on your car if you have one of these roofs. Or when the roof is wide open, it shouldn't do this. But its very unsettling to me to have to literally worry about this hanging over my head issue!

Poor Service

The experience with the care specialists was arduous. At first they were reluctant to believe my experience then would NOT escalate my matter to a manager, they told me I couldnt keep a loaner car for the full time my car would need to be repaired accused me of stealing the loaner car. made false quotes about the dealership that was handling my situation etc etc etc. I am not a Happy Alfa owner. It is 2 months today since I last saw my car.

Sunroof

I read the article and yes i understand that it is not exclusive to Alfa however you would think a high end car would have high end parts not things made from cheap manufacturers. I agree I dont want to have to worry everytime I drive my car.
