My normal procedure when not driving any of my cars for extended periods of time is to hook up a battery tender using the cigarette lighter outlet to keep the car's battery ready and fully charged. When the Giulia first came out I seem to remember there was a discussion that suspected the Giulia's cigarette lighter outlet may not be active to use with a battery tender connector and that you had to use alligator clips directly to the battery to keep it charged.

True or false? Can I use a cigarette lighter connection or do I have to use alligator clips?

True. Cigarette lighter plug won't work. Best way would be to install a pigtail with permanent eyelet connections on the battery. I use a CTEK maintainer and I'm happy with it. Alfa Romeo even sells a branded version.
