Is anyone out there having issues with apple carplay? I have 18 qv that it works for a while but then suddenly crashes and its really annoying. Sometimes it even restarts and have to wait for it to come back.

Yes, I very occasionally have problems where the car refuses to see the iPhone. Then eventually the whole entertainment system crashes, restarts, and it works again.

I'm on software version 056.

For what it's worth, I had the *exact* same problem before CarPlay was enabled on my "pre-wired" car.

One thing to always check with CarPlay is the USB cable. Just to be sure, try using the original Apple cable (or a new OEM one from the Apple Store). There are plenty of cheaper cables that work for everything except CarPlay.

My CarPlay stopped working yesterday (CarPlay icon disappeared from menu and music stopped playing from iPhone while I was driving). Unplugging and re-inserting the cable didn't fix it. Stopping the car and restarting a bit later in the day did fix it.... Seems okay today and have driving a couple of times so far.

I think in 6 months I’ve had ACP go wonky once. The screen just went black and I unplugged the iPhone and plugged it back in and it went right back to normal.

One thing to try which was a problem for me at one point on another iPhone, and not ACP related a few years ago, was lint was accumulating in the lightning port and not allowing my cable's connector to fully seat. Any movement caused the phone to lose connection and stop charging. I took a plastic pick and cleaned out a ton of acculturated lint, kinda shocked how much stuff got in there from my jeans pocket, and the cable’s connector snapped in much more positively after that and no more connection problems. Since then I make a point to clean out my lighting connector port every month or two...

Thanks for responding Lydia. I'll let you know if this problem comes back. So far, CarPlay has worked properly since that one issue a few days ago, so I', thinking that it may just have been a bad connection or cable.

I switched from using the USB connection above the cup holders to one of the USB connections under the armrest - it never disconnects. There is obviously an issue with that one USB connection on our cars.

Hi cosmicenergy,
If this is something you'd like to have your dealer look into, you can also send us a private message and we'd be happy offer you our assistance while your car is being serviced.

I've had the issue with all three USB ports. Once it gets into the bad state, it doesn't matter if I switch cables, switch ports, turn my car completely off and then back on. I just have to wait for the entertainment system to crash / turn black and restart. Then it will function fine.

I don't see the issue regularly enough to be able to get my service center to diagnose, since I can't readily reproduce it.

Constant Crashes

Has anyone solved this problem? My CarPlay crashes all the time. It may work for about 20 mins, then crashes. Sometimes it reconnects and sometimes it does not. I’ve tried different cables including the one that came with the phone. I brought it to the dealer and they said my software was up to date. Not sure what else I can try.

I’ve had my Lusso for 2 weeks and love it, but CarPlay not working on a $50 k car is ridiculous. It works about 25% of the time and I’ve tried every suggestion I’ve found and then some. At first I thought this was an Apple issue, but when I tried my wife’s phone and it connected the first time and then started having the same problem, I’m convinced it’s an AR problem. To me it’s a safety issue and AR making it so hard to get Infotainment updates seems irresponsible.

I can verify what you wrote Jerry. My iPhone was not accepting a charge---Turns out it was lint in the lightning port and fixed by gently cleaning with a toothpick...

My pre-wired June 2017 build got CarPlay in October (Thank you Alfa Customer Care and Glendale-Ellis Alfa Romeo!). It too crashes occasionally - seemingly more often when I first got it, now not very often. In that time period I transitioned from a iPhone X running iOS 11 to a iPhone XS running iOS 12, so who knows if this impacted anything. Usually after a CarPlay crash, it almost always immediately restarts. Occasionally I need to disconnect the USB cable and reconnect to get it going. Of course before I had CarPlay, I would need to disconnect the USB cable sometimes too - in fact, it seems like I had to do that more often before CarPlay. Also, before CarPlay, I had the VERY annoying issue (like others) where the song would be set to repeat. That never happens now, and if CarPlay was a complete disappointment (but it's not - it's great) this fix would be well worth it alone.

Hard to know what causes the crashes - lint, cable, Alfa hardware and software, Apple hardware and software are all potential culprits, plus it's likely more than one of these contributes to the problem. But I am definitely satisfied and love this car!

Good luck to all!

Hi guys,

I just picked up a 2018 Giulia Sport today. According to the window sticker it is 'pre-wired' for Apple CarPlay. I've tried using 3 cables (all of which work in other vehicles) but nothing happens.

Does the dealer need to do something to activate this feature? Thanks

Yeah glad to help. Stuff just accumulates in there and gets compressed every time you stick the connector in. It only takes a few mm of compressed lint and the connector won’t seat properly.
