Dead Battery/Any Ideas

Hey all, any thoughts are appreciated. Two days ago gave my Ti Sport a hand wash. I had the FOB in my pocket and while drying I could hear the doors lock and unlock multiple times.. When I approached they'd unlock; when I stepped back they'd lock. Multiple times. My guess is 20X..

Yesterday no driving. Tonight I went to fire her up and completely dead.. Had to use the key inside the FOB for entry, and there is no sign of life whatsoever from the console or dash. Looks like the battery is completely drained. Curious if anyone knows of any secret codes in terms of "pump the brakes 3X and gas 2X" in order to get the car to wake up. I doubt the battery is really dead.. Instead I lean to the car shut itself down due to all the lock/unlock sequences.

You might disconnect the negative battery cable and reconnect. Listen for any resets in doorlocks or such. Try again. If no life then hook up to a battery tender and look for signs of life. Still no luck, may be new battery time.

Try a voltmeter across the battery leads or the under hood jump start terminals? That will positively indicate if the battery is dead.
A 12V test lamp is not as accurate, but will also get the job done.

A battery tender will take days to charge up the battery in Giulia from dead. A charger that can supply at least a couple of amps a better plan, assuming that the battery is dead.

I haven't experienced exactly your issue but have suffered a dead battery when I left a Bluetooth ELM327 OBD2 diagnostic module connected to the OBD port (UK/European car) overnight which killed the battery. My car did unlock itself a couple of times on its own and the alarm went off a few times early in the morning as a result of battery slowly draining. When I went to start the car in the morning it would not unlock so had to use the keyfob key to get in followed by dead dash and console. Yours surely sounds like a dead battery. I don't believe there is any secret wake up sequence.

I ended up jump starting the Giulia using another car at the jump terminals under the hood after leaving the donor car battery connected for about 10 mins with engine running for batteries to equalise before attempting to start the Giulia. There were a number of Check Error codes on first start. The battery also has IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) which will need to go through a re-learning phase of about 4 to 5 start/drive cycles over 40-50mph (I think). While IBS is re-learning Start-Stop system will not work (if fitted in the USA am not sure). I could clear the other codes using the very OBD2 reader that caused the battery to go flat . The car may also remain in N mode without full DNA modes until all errors either self-clear or cleared by diagnostics.

You are probably better off calling AR breakdown assistance if you guys have such an arrangement. Ultimately, AR need to diagnose what caused the battery to drain which from your description sure sounds like either door lock or key fob related. If you have what is called over here as "Convenience Pack" to allow keyless unlock/lock of doors which has a button + hand sensors on the front door handles these could be faulty or stuck causing repeated door locking/unlocking.

My TI does the locking and unlocking too when standing away and spraying with hose or hand washing the doors. I asked service and they said not to have key in pocket when washing. I think it's the sensors on the door handles, the water tricks it to think it's a hand and the logic sees a key. The sensor is probably looking for a change in resistance.

PS I hope the door handle buttons are water prof.

I have washed my car plenty of times with a car safe pressure washer and the lock buttons do appear waterproof. I always leave the keyfob away from car when washing to stop it unlocking every time the sensors detect water and assume it to be hand. Still does not explain why the OP's battery drained.

Sorry to kick this post back to life but need to whine to someone.. I had a dead battery yesterday and had to resort to calling for Alfa rescuers which involved just a phone call to get a wrecker to my home.

I took the car to a car wash the day before and pressure washed the tires and wheels and ran the car thru a touch less auto washer. Wiped it all down with detailer and parked it in the garage..

Got up yesterday to a completely dead car. had to access the trunk latch inside to get to the battery and tried my trickle charger but the lights in the door handles began to flash and click. Freaky... so I waited till the wrecker came and he jumped it using the posts in the engine department. Started up ok and began cycling through all of the codes and engine service bells and whistles.

Drove it around a bit and after a few minutes it would start and run ok but the warnings continued to cycle. Loaded it on the flatbed and said see you later...called the dealer to let them know it was coming.

Dealer service tech has been on the phone with me and the car is being evaluated, no idea what may have caused this so far,, not home to me yet ..

The real positive part of this is this experience is the response from the Alfa Roadside Service folks. I made one call gave my name and they had my phone number, address and details about the car and they took me serious and sent a service wrecker as soon as able. In addition they called me four times to check on my status to determine if there was anything else they could do to aid me. Great to know Alfa is standing behind their product and reputation.

A little point of concern about the battery. I was on the phone with AR-USA the other day about a different issue. Without any prompting, the AR-USA guy says that if the car is parked in cold weather, it needs to be connected to a trickle charger or it will drain down. Huh?

This doesn't affect me much because I live in Texas, but what's going on for AR-USA to give out this unsolicited instruction?

Thankfully my PLX Devices Kiwi3 automatically goes to sleep after a period of inactivity and only has 3.9mA power consumption in sleep mode. Assuming the battery is healthy to begin with, one can leave the car parked for weeks on end with the OBD2 module connected without an issue.
